Google photos has a happy habit of reminding me of what I was up to this day one year, two years, three years (and so on) ago. Today it pointed out that in 2020, just after the worst of Lockdown was over, we escaped briefly to Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. And there we discovered Mossyard Bay.
Let’s take a virtual trip: there’s not a fairground ride, amusement arcade or kiss-me-quick hat in sight. There’s not even a chippie. Just us, the rocky shore, and the sea, advancing or retreating with the tide. Happy memories, translated into monochrome.

For Bren’s Mid-Week Monochrome #106, and as suggested by Sarah, of Travel with Me fame. Bren herself takes us to the Nidd Gorge, my back yard when I lived in Harrogate: while Sarah, for her post, is in her favourite city, Paris.
Welcome aboard… Thank you so much for joining in.
Scotland is beautiful.. Mossyard sound like my kind of place.

These are lovely, particularly the shells. We also enjoy this feature in our house although in the depths of winter I wish it was ‘on this day six months ago’.

I know what you mean. But even midwinter can LOOK lovely, when it’s all in the past!

True, particularly on a bright, frosty day!

Ah the monochrome works well for the shoreline of the retreating (?) tide. The simple contrast makes the rock strewn scene rather dramatic – could there be a wreck soon to be revealed?

Maybe, maybe not. It’s actually a fairly sheltered site on the Firth of Forth: so weathering, rather than rough seas will have wrought those rocky shores.

Not an old-time wreckers beach then.

Beautiful images, Margaret! And ‘Mossyard’ – wouldn’t that make a most evocative title for something? A memoir, a poem, perhaps?

I’m expecting to see something from your pen any day soon ….

The images all look great in monochrome that adds to the feeling of unspoiled remoteness.

It’s not quite as remote as it may appear. Which makes it so special that it’s quite reachable, and yet unspoilt.

A reminder that we didn’t need quite as much as we had thought. What a weird time it has been – and still is.

It goes on being rather weird. I’m not back to the pre-pandemic me, and doubt if I ever will be.

It is a wonderful place – I have strong memories still. It was a perfect spot to start recovering from that strange period of isolation during the pandemic. This was isolation in a good way!

These work so well in monochrome. I really must do more B&W photography, it can be extremely effective. Mossyard Bay looks lovely and looked a little familiar so I looked it up and see that it is practically opposite a place we drove to one evening when we stayed in D&G. We were on the opposite side of the Big Water of Fleet at Carrick Beach. Equally stunning and equally remote.

Indeed. We actually seriously considered moving to Kirkcudbright.

Is that idea dead in the water?

It was before we moved to Cornwall. We decided that it was too far a journey for our children (that worked out well… ) However, with the state of politics in this country, Scotland is looking very appealing.
