Moody Autumn

On Tuesday morning, I was quietly dreading my shift as volunteer Roaming Ranger in Studley Royal Deer Park. ‘Raining’ was an understatement. As I was driving over, the wipers sliced savagely across the windscreen, ineffectually sweeping away the rivers of rainwater cascading over the car. Signing in, we volunteers on various parts of the estate commiserated wanly with each other, and went our separate ways.

But outside, the rain had suddenly and unexpectedly decided to stop. Instead, familiar trees, now turning autumn gold and russset could just be perceived through the mist. A familiar autumn scene, especially here where we have three rivers in town to add to the general miasma of an October or November day.

Much later in the morning, as I was completing my shift in a much cheerier frame of mind, autumn’s third and best mood showed itself. Omnipresent autumn colour in the form of leaves cascaded to my feet to be eagerly shuffled and crunched through as I willingly connected with my inner child.

I offer a selection of photos to illustrate these different moods. I didn’t take my camera with me on Tuesday. The weather and the forecast were so very poor I just didn’t dare expose the poor thing to the elements. More fool me, to believe the weather forecast.

My featured photo is looking through our kitchen window on Tuesday morning. There’s more of the same on the way …

  1. this is a wonderful autumnal collection Margaret, thank you so much! I still am particularly in awe over the ‚sheep in fog‘ pic but I love all the takes you offer us.
Thank you so much. It reminds me of my many years in Devon, where quite a number of your choice found similarities in my camera. Such great memories. Thank you.

      1. oh please do Margaret. We have come to love it so much that we would never have left, had it not been for HH‘s job and all these years later, for the end of his employer‘s company. We not only dearly loved the proximity of the sea but the whole bay is very protected with a mild climate, beautiful rolling hills, and the kindest people one can imagine. You would even have the herds of sheep!

  2. What stunning photos! I enjoyed this post, both your description of your changing mood along with the changing weather, and the photos. The fall colours are beautiful but I have a special place in my heart for the rain-streaked windows and foggy sheep.

      1. When we visited Fountains Abbey – in August – the weather was much like you described. It made for a damp but atmospheric visit. We passed several rangers and spoke with a few. All of them in various states of dampness and all of them cheerful and chatty. Well used to the vagaries of Yorkshire weather, just as you are!

  3. Autumn at its finest. Even the garden viewed through the rain is beautiful, if best seen from indoors with mug of tea in hand!

  4. Wonderful moody autumn post, Margaret! Shame you didn’t take your camera, but you’ve got a nice variety of images. Love the autumn leaves, and I would be wanting t crunch through them too!

    1. It was a shame not to have my camera, but I honestly thought it would drown. In truth there wasn’t too much crunching, it was too soggy underfoot. Don’t tell anyone …

  5. Wow! You showed us that bad weather can be our friend. I am sorry you had to go through that downpour, but the photos you shared are outstanding, especially the fall colors set. Beautiful!

  6. You’ve captured the different moods of an English autumn perfectly! I dislike the first (please get the rain taps turned off before we come home next week!) but the other two moods ate beautiful 🙂 And who doesn’t love crunching through autumn leaves, at any age?!

  7. You have shown the different moods of Autumn so well that we all can feel it. Using the windscreen makes it even more real… Love these galleries, and maybe most of all the sheep and the stone fence in the lovely landscape. Or no, all those colours too. And the man by the bench – there is such lovely light in that one.

So glad you managed to join in!
