Out and about in Harrogate yesterday, I came upon the following Retail Experiences. The featured photo shows the collection of dogs and cats greeting me as I passed them on the pavement.
Here’s a tobacconist’s shop (who knew such a thing existed any more?) with a reindeer and Father Christmas bursting through the plate glass window. Well, they were rather late delivering.

Lastly, there’s a – well, I don’t quite know what to call it – Quirky Notions and Ephemera shop. These characters greeted me as I wandered in, then out again.

The rain started to fall, then deluge, and I scurried away.
So you didn’t buy any windows then?

Nah. Look, the tobacconist’s was broken.

Harrogate has some interesting shops and a Betty’s

You’ve reminded me I didn’t go and look at Betty’s window display. It usually has a good one at Christmas.

Tut, tut Margaret that would be my first port of call

I head for a favourite place with just as good coffee and cakes that doesn’t require re-mortgaging before going through the door!

In fact there are increasing numbers of good coffee hunts. Manna, up Cold Bath Road and opposite those doggies is a good bakery cum-café. Bean and Bud down Commercial Street is a coffee and tea specialist, but less good on sweet treats. Other suggestions welcomed from locals, as I’m out of the loop now.

It’s a successful little shopping area away from the centre. There’s always been room for an individual approach here.

I like the quirky characters. And the ‘broken’ window decorations are certainly eye-catching!

Quite novel. Thy must have been bought from somewhere, but I haven’t spotted their twins in any other shops.

Interesting sights! Worth the walk.

I thought so. It wasn’t the town centre, so maybe a bit more quirky.

Love the pet mannequins! Not so sure about the others, but interesting.

I used to love Tobacconists. The smells were amazing!

You’re right. Unlit tobacco has an interesting spicy sort of smell. Lit up, it’s is a different story. I did a post-grad year at University, back in the days when smoking in lectures was considered OK. Five, yes five of my fellow-students smoked pipes. It was beyond unpleasant.

I smoked a pipe from the age of 29 and have to linger close by if I encounter a pipe smoker today!

How I’d have hated you Peter! (I don’t now. Can’t smell your pipe)

That Santa and reindeer / broken window display is certainly novel! If the point of a shop window display is to make you stop and take notice, that one is definitely doing its job 😀

I still didn’t buy any cigarettes, cigars or baccy!

Nor would I have done 😀

I know right, soon as I moved to London I bought a jumper. These days you’ll almost never find me tottering in my heels in minus 5 without my coat.

The suggestion being that once upon a time, you did. I never thought goose pimples were a good look.

These were unusual displays far from the mainstream shops I normally see in London. The tobacconist’s shop looks charming!

Liking Santa and his reindeer, very quirky, but not so keen on the other figures at the tobacconists! A bit of racial stereotyping there I’d say. Interesting that Peter could tell you the exact date he gave up his pipe. My dad smoked a pipe until sometime in my teens and he could probably have told you exactly the same thing!

Exactly. That’s why I didn’t put him centre – stage. Though I – probably wrongly – associate that sort of stereotyping with pipe-smokers. Sorry, Anabel’s dad and Peter!

Definitely not my dad! Or, I’m sure, Peter. The shop owner is possibly quite “traditional”.

Actually going to Betty’s in Harrogate tommorrow for a friend’s birthday. Hope I pass that lovely assortment of pavement pets. Anywhere near?

You’ll need to walk up Cold Bath Road – ask for directions it’s directly off the part of the Stray where you will be. It’s on the left, just opposite a bakery and coffee-stop every bit as good as Betty’s! But Betty’s is the place for a special treat. Enjoy!

I didn’t see the pavement pets in the end but I did go in that very eclectic shop with the strange sofa couple. Instantly recognised them from your post!

Interesting to see the statue in the doorway of the tobacconist’s – they were a common feature in these shops in the 19th century. I wonder if this is an original or a copy.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I wonder too. You do however see them not infrequently in junk/antique shops so they may not be all that hard to come by in an age when they’re not sought after.

There was a tobacconists in an arcade for years which had a full size stuffed bear outside. Vaping shops haven’t come up with anything remotely as interesting
