Window Shopping?

Out and about in Harrogate yesterday, I came upon the following Retail Experiences. The featured photo shows the collection of dogs and cats greeting me as I passed them on the pavement.

Here’s a tobacconist’s shop (who knew such a thing existed any more?) with a reindeer and Father Christmas bursting through the plate glass window. Well, they were rather late delivering.

Lastly, there’s a – well, I don’t quite know what to call it – Quirky Notions and Ephemera shop. These characters greeted me as I wandered in, then out again.

The rain started to fall, then deluge, and I scurried away.

      1. In fact there are increasing numbers of good coffee hunts. Manna, up Cold Bath Road and opposite those doggies is a good bakery cum-café. Bean and Bud down Commercial Street is a coffee and tea specialist, but less good on sweet treats. Other suggestions welcomed from locals, as I’m out of the loop now.

    1. You’re right. Unlit tobacco has an interesting spicy sort of smell. Lit up, it’s is a different story. I did a post-grad year at University, back in the days when smoking in lectures was considered OK. Five, yes five of my fellow-students smoked pipes. It was beyond unpleasant.

  1. That Santa and reindeer / broken window display is certainly novel! If the point of a shop window display is to make you stop and take notice, that one is definitely doing its job 😀

  2. Liking Santa and his reindeer, very quirky, but not so keen on the other figures at the tobacconists! A bit of racial stereotyping there I’d say. Interesting that Peter could tell you the exact date he gave up his pipe. My dad smoked a pipe until sometime in my teens and he could probably have told you exactly the same thing!

    1. Exactly. That’s why I didn’t put him centre – stage. Though I – probably wrongly – associate that sort of stereotyping with pipe-smokers. Sorry, Anabel’s dad and Peter!

    1. You’ll need to walk up Cold Bath Road – ask for directions it’s directly off the part of the Stray where you will be. It’s on the left, just opposite a bakery and coffee-stop every bit as good as Betty’s! But Betty’s is the place for a special treat. Enjoy!

      1. I didn’t see the pavement pets in the end but I did go in that very eclectic shop with the strange sofa couple. Instantly recognised them from your post!

  3. Interesting to see the statue in the doorway of the tobacconist’s – they were a common feature in these shops in the 19th century. I wonder if this is an original or a copy.

    1. I wonder too. You do however see them not infrequently in junk/antique shops so they may not be all that hard to come by in an age when they’re not sought after.
