London friends – help me please. I took this photo of a statue of a workman and his pigeon chum somewhere near the Tower of London. Where? Who? What?

I’m pretty sure he’s ‘Statue to the Unknown Building Worker’ on Tower Hill. He carries a spirit level and represents the thousand or so workers who die each year in accidents on UK building sites; a wreath is laid on him every year on International Workers’ Day with a suitable few words and a two-minute silence. He was only unveiled (by Ken Livingstone) in 2006. I’ll double-check next time I go to Fenchurch Street station via Tower Hill, but meanwhile you can google him.

Love the photo and the successful collective detective work. Also so interesting to see ordinary, working men portrayed in the City even if it is for tragic losses.

Yes, a great team helped me out here. And I liked the fact of ordinary life being celebrated too: sorry it was for a sad reason though.

Interesting statue and the pigeon keeping company with the builder really adds to the photo.
