The river down the track from us is a favourite fishing ground for herons. I love to watch them as they patiently watch too, for fish. And I love it too that wherever we travel, we’re likely to see local herons about their business. The one in the featured photo lives on the Guadalquivir in Córdoba, but his routines seem just the same as those of our Yorkshire birds.
This one lives in Kew Gardens, and the heavy rain makes him look a little out of focus:

Here are a few more:

Elke of Pictures Imperfect demonstrates that the black-and-greyness of these birds makes them ideal for Jude’s Life in Colour challenge, as she’s seeking shots that are black and grey this month.
Great pictures, herons are such stately birds.

Aren’t they just? I love them.

Oh, poor chap, the Heron who lives in Kew does look chilly! But aren’t they extraordinary birds – your pictures are just lovely… as an ex fish keeper, I’ve a love / hate relationship with these fine birds!

You need to chat to our landlord. He’s tired of stocking his pond for the benefit of the herons!

Oh they are fabulous and you’ve a fine selection. They even turn up in my road from time to time to raid the garden ponds. Such smart, attractive and fascinating creatures.

They seem to have a wide fan base, don’t they? Fabulous birds.

Lovely birds, and so entertaining to watch when they are slowly advancing on their dinner.

Wonderful photos, and if you have been to Kew certainly all around there and along the river is heron country. There is an old reservoir, Leg of Mutton, now a nature reserve and heronry where the nests and young can be on small nesting islands in the spring.

I’d love to see a heronry! I know there is one near us, but I’ve not ben able to track it down.

I love to watch these birds too. I find it hard to get good photos of them, but you sure got some nice ones!

They are quite skittish when the camera comes out, aren’t they? But I was at quite a distance, and deceived them.

Ah yes – the heron …. the lonely one who patiently waits by standing and staring. Well done, Margaret.

Was that the heron or me you were talking about 😉 ?

I love to see herons too – such stately birds and so patient as they wait for a fish 🙂 I also love seeing them in flight, their silhouette is so distinctive!

It really is. And that slow and stately wing beat …

We saw 3 or 4 this afternoon, Margaret, but at too great a distance to get a decent shot. These are perfect. Especially the one all in a huddle from the rain.

A British heron. He knows all about rain.

Herons always seem a touch mysterious to me – other worldly. Stillness with intent – so well demonstrated in the stone cherubs shot.

That one was stalking an early breakfast. Night camera at work! And yes, a little other-worldly.

Aren’t they just fabulous? We caught sight of one the other day on the way to the supermarket. And when I lived in South Africa there would often be a heron standing opposite our house.

They get everywhere. It’s somehow comforting to see them in far-flung places.

Gosh, Margaret – how wonderful the top picture is with the striped of colour and the shadow! It’s like a painting. Herons are such characterful birds.
