We’ve just enjoyed a couple of days in Scarborough, once Yorkshire’s premier seaside resort, with thousands flocking here once the railway came to town in 1845. More of all that another day. But for today, let’s just enjoy sea and sand – in black and white, just because … and in nearly black and white, because that’s what the camera saw early on Thursday morning. Here we are, walking along the several beaches that Scarborough enjoys. And ending with a gull, because herring gulls, usually intent on stealing your fish and chips, are constant companions here.

But the sea … and the gulls, are always there.

For Leanne’s Monochrome Madness.
Scarborough was the first British beach I ever saw… this was in 1998… my relatives, who live in Middlesbrough, took me there.

Its days of grandeur are still evident, but it’s also shabby and run down in places. But there’s still plenty to enjoy, I think

I recall thinking it was NOTHING like an Australian beach! 😬😆

🤣 Well, no sharks anyway! Though dolphins are seen increasingly often.

My Dad lived in Middlesbrough for most of his adult life. We were there briefly, 2 weeks ago, on our way back from Hartlepool to Leeds. It was raining xx

Beautiful shot of the sun breaking through clouds. Monochrome works so well with this selection.

Oh thank you! It’s easy to think that the sun requires colour, but in fact b/w can lend even more drama, I think,

I loved Scarborough when we visited a number of years ago. One of the Bronte sisters is buried there I believe. I didn’t know it at the time so didn’t visit her grave.

Oh, Scarborough is proud of its Brontë connection, and the house on the site of Ann Brontë’s place-of-death boasts a blue plaque. I should have popped into St. Mary’s church graveyard to see her burial place, but neglected to do so.

You’ve reminded me of the best fish n chips ever, bought somewhere on the front next to a slot machine place decades ago. Great beach shots.

Thanks Tish. There was a chippie on the seafront that we noticed that claimed to be The Best in the World.. A bold claim. But your description of its whereabouts fits in.

Amazed if it’s still going!

Maybe 6 owners further down the line, but at the seaside F&C is pretty much obigatory. The seagulls were very much of the opinion that everyone whold buy – and share – portions with them.

This takes me back to my teenage years when my friend and I used to visit Scarborough over the Easter weekend, usually sleeping out under the stars! I have a vague recollection that it was a place where mods on their scooters used to meet.

Mods eh? Now you’re going back a bit! And sleeping under the stars? You WERE brave!

Our annual holiday when I was young was a caravan or cottage on the outskirts of Scarborough. Love those naked shots of sea- images 3…4? xx

How fabulous, especially third from last. My mum and dad were very fond of Scarborough, and I think it was the scene of our last ever family holiday when my sister and I were teenagers. We were not pleased at being made to go! However, some years later John and I visited them for a day when they were staying there and I started to see the appeal. This was in the 80s – I’d probably love it now.

I didn’t know the town well, but loved it. It’s been through hard times when all the wonderful 19th century buildings for the well-heeled stated to look pretty shabby. But it seems on the way up again. The gardens and parks and public spaces are – goodness knows how – beautifully maintained and there are miles of beaches. We had an excellent time. Even though, frankly, we stayed in a branch of Fawlty Towers.

The last time I was in Scarborough was nearly thirty years ago! I can’t really believe it. I liked it there and am sorry it is (like most other seaside towns) a little run-down and shabby in places. I love the monochrome photos!
