So many homes in urban Spain come without gardens, that public playgrounds are two-a-penny anywhere you care to look. And geometric shapes form part of any play space. Here’s one that Anaïs enjoys – even though the family has a garden.

Indeed! I’ve just come back from such a session, when I had to ‘sleep’ several times within the play equipment. Imaginative play has just hit town!

But you don’t get such fun play equipment in a garden.

Certainly not! Witches’ hats and broken swings….

Yep! And I hated those witches hats.

Didn’t we all?

I had to look that up. No witches hats in German playgrounds, I think. But boring jungle gyms, very straight and geometric (sic!). And those little roundabouts which we rode until we almost threw up. – But I agree. Nowadays playgrounds are exciting. I like those small versions of zip lines.

Oh to have that kind of agility! And confidence that my body will do what I tell it to do.

Exactly. To know no fear and to be as agile as a goat, eh?

Yes! But, sadly, that ship has long since sailed.

What fun to spend time back in the playground with your grandkids and the Spanish ones are often quite colourful and different. I seem to remember accidents on witches hats!

I didn’t think of the modern playground for my geometric squares
