I think Greylag Goose parents definitely keep their broods moving forward, renewing the blood line. These geese only moved onto our village ponds last year, but already they have had the effect of making ducks and moorhens move away, and ensuring that those few that remain aren’t able to raise their own babies to maturity. When it comes to protecting local wildlife, many of us here aren’t so keen on offering these geese much of a helping hand.

Loving the squares, but not the story so much. Not good at all

PS and won’t mention the link!

Aren’t I hopeless? I spent ages checking and re-checking the link, then forgot to put it in. Durr …

Well made me giggle as thought that might be the reason or that perhaps the geese had scared it away!

Oh, of course! Blame the geese. I generally do.

What a pity they made the other birds move away! 😔

They’re Big Bad Bruisers.

They’re fierce, then. I came across quite a few Canada Geese on Manchester’s canal towpaths recently and expected to turn back but they just quietly hissed at us and let us pass. Glad they weren’t Greylags.

Greylags also tend to give up if you face them out. It’s not the same story for ducks though.

We take away all their land and water, and when they fight over the tiny bits we leave for them, then we always pick out the winners as being unfair!

Oh. Very fair point.

Very cute … till they grow up and become Big Bruisers.

Goslings are so cute, but it’s a shame that the native ducks are chased away.

I know. It’s bloody and brutal round here.

Humans could take a few lessons from the geese to keep kids in line. 😉

Haha. An obedient crocidile of small children could be quite a sight!

The goslings are very sweet but it’s a shame they’ll grow up to be a lot less so

Yep. They’ll be brought up lean and mean.

Great captures, Margaret. Geese seem to be very attentive parents.

Great images Margaret. We have Canada Geese here around our pond. The dads are mean when they have goslings to protect. I hiss back at them. They don’t bother the ducks though.

They certainly bother our ducks, who scarper. And the few that remain don’t seem able to rear their brods to maturity. They always have high casualties (the road, foxes etc) but last year, the first that large numbers of geese were present not a single duckling made adulthood.

We did have your type of geese visit (3 of them). They attacked the people walking around the pond. I’m in a senior community and one of our residents fell because of the geese. Fortunately, she didn’t break anything. Fish and game came and rehomed the three geese.

Yes I can. Can you have them rehomed?

This whole area is so jam-packed with them, I don’t know where anyone could start.

Those geese again! Mum and Dad look very officious but the wee fluffy ones are sweet.

I know what it purports to mean enough to use it – more or less correctly. But I still don’t know what it means!
