… work high up on the highest spires of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The squares show one of these craftsmen doing his work, almost at the very top. The featured photo gives some idea of how Gaudí’s as yet unfinished cathedral towers high above the city.

Upstanding craftsmen indeed

To be fair, if you look carefully, you can see them trussed up in all kinds of harnesses. It wouldn’t get me up there though.

Nor me! I would have the screaming abdabs

Yay! Back to SF! 🙂 🙂 You could watch these guys for ages. How you work at that height is beyond me, Margaret!

I know. It strikes me as a very cruel and unusual punishment for men who are probably decent upstanding (see what I did there?) citizens.

I bet they’re glad to sit down at the end of the day! 🙂 🙂

A terrifying job, must be alpinists in training perhaps.

Great shots Margaret. I was feeling ok looking at your close ups but pulling back to the view brings on dizziness. Glad I’m sitting on my sofa!

They make for interesting photos capturing assured confidence and skill, but also the visual hot orange against the cool blue. Perhaps their hobby is rock climbing or even parkour and this is a walk in the park for them.

All week and at weekends too? That’s just obsessive!

My first partner was a mountaineer and rock climber and obsessive didn’t even begin to describe him. I left him.

Well done. You obviously came a very poor second to the mountains. No wonder you like the flatlands of East Anglia!

It is not a Cathedral. It is a theme park!

I completely know what you mean. Somehow, it wasn’t too busy when we were last there, and we didn’t feel too herded. Parts of it are amazing, and moving too. But I think it’s lost its way a bit, and I’m not sure it’s necessarily the building Gaudí envisaged

It is a magnificent building for sure. Rome will not give it Cathedral status because Barcelona already has a Cathedral.
It has been built without any funding from Church or State, from Catalonia or Barcelona. The desperate need for funding has turned it into a visitor attraction and theme park,

It took Covid-19 to stop the construction work for the first time since the Spanish Civil War! That craftsman at the top should have no difficulty in social distancing.

I should have mentioned that! Thanks for reminding me. Yes, the roof-gang should be very social distanced indeed!

extraordinary work, at least they have harnesses though unlikely many of the men who worked on NYC skyscrapers in the 1920s

Nice one! Even as an admirer of Gaudi, I wouldn’t want a job like this. This is the time of year where I often go to Barcelona – your photos brought back memories!

Ah, we might bump into one another sometime. With a daughter living there it’s becoming our second home.

Ah, that’s a lovely chance to get to know this wonderful city better! Let’s hope it won’t be too long before we all get the chance to bump into each other on foreign ground.
