My turn to host Leanne’s Monochrome Madness this week. I thought it would be fun to explore those shots which, by accident, design, or clever editing, are monochrome in any colour but black and white. Let’s go…
Winter scenes can often offer opportunities. The camera often seems to re-register those – to our eyes -crisp white snowy scenes to muted greens and blues.

Some years ago, this church in Bamberg took my eye, its doorway saints ravaged by the weather, and presenting to the world as olde-worlde sepia.

Sepia again. It was a sepia-ish sort of day when I spotted this young herring gull in Newcastle.

And this cherry blossom? I had an afternoon of blameless fun playing with the special effects on my camera.

One day – quite a few years ago now – my grandson and I enjoyed ourselves at the Horniman Museum, where a tent was in place bathing us in a range of different colours. Here William is in blue – and inevitably- red, because who knew that eventually, the shot would find its way into Becky’s Squares challenge #SimplyRed?

We’ll finish off in the natural world again.

I think this final shot just about squeezes under the wire as monochrome. What can you show us?
now tcs one needs some thinking, a good challenge. your choices a excellent

I like the bird, don’t want to think about the snow and absolutely love the tree!

No, it’s not the right time of year for snow. That bird will grow up to be a seaside thief, so I’d stick with the tree if I were you!

Great theme. Love the bird…and the snow…perfect!

The things some people will do to be Simply Red, Margaret! And I don’t care what kind of shot that last one is- it’s lovely! I rather like sepia but, no, I’m not going to indulge xx

I love the theme and photos you shared. So, if I get it right, you’re looking for photos that are naturally close to monochrome colors (your winter photos, for example) or that were edited to a monochrome tonality. It sounds like fun.

Dead right! Oh, please join in if you have time. I know you’ll have some great shots to share.

I like the herring gull. I prefer the naturally monochrome ones, however the ones that look as if viewed through a coloured looking glass have a special charm.

Funniy enough, apart from the cherry blossom, every single shot is a natural monochrome. You know me. I don’t ‘do’ post-processing.

Third time trying to comment as, if I backspace, the entire comment disappears. I love the winter shots, as I, oddly enough to most, like winter with snow. But your last shot is my favorite. It’s gorgeously simple or simple gorgeous in its simplicity. 😁

Oh, thanks so much. Winter is especially appealing when we’re not dealing with it! And thanks too for persisting. WP eh? It has its moments ….

Such an interesting take. The first cherry blossom reminds me of an artist whose work I admire. I have one of her paintings in our bedroom.

As I told you when you first proposed it, this is a theme after my own heart! I really like your examples – I think my favourite is the young gull which is beautifully captured (even though I don’t really like herring gulls at all!) I also love what you’ve done with the cherry blossom, together they make such a great impact. And I think the last shot with the two trees definitely qualifies and is also excellent 🙂
I managed to keep to a sensible number by taking my examples only from my Sicily and Malta trip: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/gallery-having-one-colour/

I’m looking forward to seeing your post in a moment. Yes, that herring gull will grow up to be bruiser. Do you know the restaurant in the Baltic Centre? They gawp malevolently at you through the window as you eat. Most off-putting!

Yes, I know what you mean! Although I do like the kittiwakes there – much more gentle and prettier 🙂
