Unimpeachable Underwear?

We had some friends staying a while back. The sort who don’t outstay their welcome because, even though they’re there long enough to need to run a few things through the washing machine, they muck in, do the shopping, cook a meal and generally become part of the family. Here’s part of the washing line during their stay …

  1. We hosted a Japanese homestay student who had 7 pairs of underwear, a different colour for each day of the week. He even folded his dirty laundry before he gave it to me to wash. So polite and organized.

    1. That’s the reminder of an old chestnut of a joke. A customs officer stopped said exchange student and asked: “Why SEVEN pairs of underwear?” “Easy,” he answered. “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday …” Next in line was a pretty young French girl. “Now I’m interested,” said the customs officer. “Why FIVE pairs of underwear? Little dainty ones at that.” “Olàlà,” said the woman. “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – and on the weekend my boyfriend comes to visit!” Next in line was a broad, suntanned woman who carried 12 coarse knickers with longish legs and a string around the midrif. “Obviously,” the woman said with a heavy accent before the officer could even ask, “January, February, March …”

  2. What a lovely glimpse into the rhythms of shared life, Margaret!!! Those friendships that slip so effortlessly into our days, helping with the cooking, the laundry, and the laughter. There’s something deeply comforting about a washing line that tells a story of belonging. Thank you for reminding me that it’s not grand gestures but these quiet, everyday acts of togetherness that linger most in memory.

    1. You can’t have been to a French market! The colours available on French market underwear stalls are unbelievably garish. Shocking pink, orange, bright mauve … you name it. Unbelievable but true.
