We had some friends staying a while back. The sort who don’t outstay their welcome because, even though they’re there long enough to need to run a few things through the washing machine, they muck in, do the shopping, cook a meal and generally become part of the family. Here’s part of the washing line during their stay …

For Becky’s #SimplyRed Squares.
The things we post for Beckys squares 😂

We hosted a Japanese homestay student who had 7 pairs of underwear, a different colour for each day of the week. He even folded his dirty laundry before he gave it to me to wash. So polite and organized.

Wow. I hope he never muddled his colours up.

That’s the reminder of an old chestnut of a joke. A customs officer stopped said exchange student and asked: “Why SEVEN pairs of underwear?” “Easy,” he answered. “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday …” Next in line was a pretty young French girl. “Now I’m interested,” said the customs officer. “Why FIVE pairs of underwear? Little dainty ones at that.” “Olàlà,” said the woman. “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – and on the weekend my boyfriend comes to visit!” Next in line was a broad, suntanned woman who carried 12 coarse knickers with longish legs and a string around the midrif. “Obviously,” the woman said with a heavy accent before the officer could even ask, “January, February, March …”

Don’t worry. It was a while back, and they don’t read my blog (not speaking English).

How did you know you would use this photo one day and the underwear seems squarish too! A good laugh.

The wearer of said underwear thought it was funny I took a snapshot. I never expected to use it in a blog post!

I’m trying my best not to comment on the politics of leaning to the right, the left, or being centrist! No, probably best not to!

Defiitely not. ‘No Comment’ seems to be best in most circumstances.

What a lovely glimpse into the rhythms of shared life, Margaret!!! Those friendships that slip so effortlessly into our days, helping with the cooking, the laundry, and the laughter. There’s something deeply comforting about a washing line that tells a story of belonging. Thank you for reminding me that it’s not grand gestures but these quiet, everyday acts of togetherness that linger most in memory.

Sad to say that in some of the US, you’re not allowed to hang clothes outside. How terrible if someone were to see your underwear! Sigh.

Isn’t that ridiculous? Or if you can, it has to be where the people next door or going by can’t see it.

You can’t have been to a French market! The colours available on French market underwear stalls are unbelievably garish. Shocking pink, orange, bright mauve … you name it. Unbelievable but true.
