Here in the UK, we know a lot about clouds. And at this time of year, we know a lot about grey clouds. Looking out of the window just now yields an unending vista of smoky grey, darkening over Mickley way to gunmetal and slate. No cotton-wool puffs of cumulus for us.
So let me whisk you to a day in June, when the plane transporting me from Barcelona to Leeds offered me a constantly changing cloudscape below me, with tantalising glimpses of beaches, landscapes and the Pyrenees, the Atlantic coast, and then crowded old England. The featured photo shows us just leaving Barcelona – hardly a cloud in the sky. And then …

Although generally a big fan of monochrome, on a grey day like this, I’m not sure I like these clouds and vistas in black and white. My memory of that summer day was of clear bright and optimistic colours. But needs must. This is for Monochrome Madness, and hosted this week by Brian, of Bushboy’s World.
A timely post. I looked out of the window this morning as daylight came and was struck by the determined greyness of today’s sky. Unremitting grey for us today I think.

However, the monochrome helps us focus on the clouds. And yes, now ‘unremitting grey’ really sums up these skies here!

‘Unremitting grey’That’s what we all seem to be saying today. And fair point about the focus – thanks.

Fabulous. A great idea for the prompt Margaret
Thanks for joining in for my Monochrome Madness Clouds 😀

A relatively short flight – but you found so many different types of clouds on that journey!

I was so lucky. A window seat and a passenger next to me who had no interest in either small talk (thank goodness!) or window-gazing.

same here, Margaret! maybe a BIT less grey, some 5 shades of lighter grey…. 🙂

You certainly got a wide variation of clouds and I think they work well in monochrome.

I remember that trip too! I know you had an amazing time to match the photos of your trip in route. Late May or early June, ah the memories! Have a fabulous day, the clouds have rolled in, but we’re in for dip tomorrow Into Friday. Lear skies with polar temps! Yikes, I’ll take the clouds any day!

Dull and grey all over here today as well, and more of the same to come I gather! So it’s great to see photos of more ‘interesting’ clouds. I know what you mean about whether black and white is the best option for these shots however, but I think some at least are very effective, in particular the last one, ‘Nearly home’ 🙂

Doesn’t England look crowded, after passing over land, even in nearby Europe, that seems so sparsely inhabited, and maybe not even farmed? It’s always quite a shock.

Yes, and so many hedges dividing the fields – that’s the thing that always strikes me the most!

some clouds definitely work better in monochrome than others – hadn’t thought to try some above the clouds.

I don’t think one often gets the chance. I had lots of opportunities that day, and they work well in colour.

You tell an interesting story with your clouds. Nearly Home is my favourite. We’ve had two days of fog and freezing temperatures. Not at all happy with that! I don’t mind the cold when it comes with blue skies.

Ditto – and thank you. We’re promised a foggy end to our day 😦

Wow, Margaret! What a stunning collection! You took the task literally and got up there in the clouds. Gorgeous gallery!

Thanks so much. This is an occasion when I think b/w didn’t win, but they’re still different from the clouds we see from Down Below.

Maybe we are just colour people. Some prefer it in b&w.

Maybe … though I do love b/w for street photography.

That is an interesting collection of clouds. Unfortunately, you are right, we have ample opportunity of studying the clouds here in the UK.
