Whitby is a rather lovely seaside town in Yorkshire. And every year at this time…
Every Goth that ever there was
will gather there for certain because...
today's the day for a Goth and Steampunk party
(Ahem. Adapted from The Teddy Bear's Picnic)
So on Friday, I went along with friends from Masham Photographic Club to be an unashamed paparazza. The atmosphere was upbeat and friendly, and those who’d gone to so much trouble to find their costumes and dress up actively sought out opportunities to have their picture taken. There was even a baby … and the oldest were well into their eighties. I felt distinctly underdessed in my workaday trousers and jacket.

An excellent day was had by all: especially after a large plate of tasty fish and chips.

Amazing. I love Whitby. We once spent Christmas there saying in a cute house overlooking the abbey on the clifftop opposite. It was very atmospheric in the middle of winter.

Oh yes, that would have been wonderful. I much prefer Whitby out of season – not that there really is an off-season these days.

Fascinating, and I’m sure that your subjects were happy to be recorded. I read something over the weekend suggesting that Goths are back but I’m sure residents of Whitby would say they’ve never gone away.

No, they never do, entirely. It’s Goth central.

They’re a fun bunch, aren’t they, and more than willing to pose for the camera. Love that lady with the huge umbrella. Goth works well in black and white. Lisa was at an event in Derbyshire and spent hours and hours sewing her costume.

Good on her! I can barely sew.

My friend Colin was there too with his camera club – he goes most years and it always looks an amazing event for photography! Your images look really good in B&W, but I’d also enjoy seeing them in colour 🙂

Funnily enough, we nearly all independently decided to go b/w, and I’ve converted my few colour ones to b/w too. Apert from the Abbey, town and sea shots.

Great photos Margaret. Did you have a Goth ice cream?
LikeLiked by 1 person
No. Should ‘of’. The woman eating the black ice cream is actually ingesting nothing more exciting than vanilla.

Yes, but imbued with evil I’m sure!

What fun Margaret. It looks like a wonderful festival, and you photographed it so well. I liked that you processed in black and white. It made the images look more goth.

That was the plan! So glad it worked for you.

What fun, Margaret. I love how you embraced the celebration of all things (and people) Goth. The baby is priceless…as well as the gentleman in the skull hat.

Looked like they were having lots of fun.
It shows in your photos.
The monochrome treatment works well with the Gothic theme.

You are certainly getting about with your camera club. And the black and white photos are very atmospheric. You have certainly taken to this genre this year. I’m not keen on goths and zombies and all that horror stuff, though ‘your’ people seem quite harmless. More steampunkish? If that’s a word,

I’m not sure I understand the difference. But it was all so friendly and cheerful. No horror at all. But b/w seemed to be what was needed. I thought, anyway.

I remember our visit to Whitby a few years ago. I LOVED the feeling of community of this town. Wonderful photos, Margaret. The black and white adds dramatic flare!
