The Thirsk Yarnbombers have been at it since 2015 when the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race passed through the town. Since then, this doughty group of knitters – some of who no longer live in the town, but in places as far-flung as Australia – have decorated the Market Square with knitted tributes on all kinds of occasions – notably the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
They’ve ‘done’ Remembrance Day more than once; commemorated the new King’s Coronation; celebrated Thirsk’s Local Treasure Alf Wight, aka James Herriot of All Creatures Great and Small fame (you could visit the museum dedicated to him here); celebrated the NHS. And now it’s Christmas. Come for a stroll round the square .

And a Happy Christmas to you all!
Great celebration with the yarnbombers. Happy Christmas, Margaret!

My goodness there are some creative people there. So delightful. A blogger in Redruth often posts photos of a very talented person who produces magnificent post box toppers on a regular basis.

Post box toppers seem to have become a bit of a ‘thing’. And a cheery addition to the urban scene too. Have a peaceful Christmas Jude, as I know I can’t wish you a merry one.

How very creative! I love the penguin, and am drawn to to the last image of the snowman amidst the trees

I like him too. But he’s cheating. His trees aren’t knitted.

Good point. No I don’t. Some get recycled every year (Remembrance), but as for the rest ……. Happy Christmas Sandra. Here’s to a Yorkshire meeting in 2024!

Wow, your yarnbombers are far more imaginative than ours! I’ve enjoyed seeing the ones around here but they’re pretty much all the same (tinsel Christmas tree and knitted Santa), so the variety in Thirsk is particularly impressive.
Have a wonderful Christmas, and I hope to catch up in 2024 🎄✨

I think they feel they have a reputation they’re keen not to lose now. And now Ripon is keen not to be left behind … You both have a lovely Christmas too, and look forward to seeing you in 24!

In related news: A couple of years ago they had (still have? I don’t know) a crochet “competition” in South Africa: Blankets for Mandela Day (which is on 18 July, i.e. in the middle of winter) with the resulting blankets distributed to needy people.

Good on those yarn bombers! We’re a bit devoid of decos this year as some councils are being politically correct, which is an excuse for saving money. Grinches!
