Any Brit could finish this off for you, no trouble. But just in case you aren’t a Brit, and can’t, here are the words of this music hall song, now over a hundred years old.
And last Monday, the seaside was where we went, for a suitably British day out. To Saltburn-by-the-Sea in fact: ex-smuggling centre, and a popular Victorian resort which still has a charmingly olde-worlde air.
There’s the sea itself. People-and-dog-watching…

… beach huts …

… the all-important pier …

… which it’s obligatory to walk to the end of, to look at the sea again …

… the equally obligatory fish-and-chip lunch, preferably overlooking the sea …

… the boats in the small harbour …

… and the header mops up the final necessary sights: two surf-board enthusiasts, and even one seagull.
For Cee’s CMMC Challenge: Pick a topic from my photo.
And Debbie’s Six Word Saturday: I’ll get away with it, I think, as the ratio of words to photos is quite low.
I liked Saltburn when I visited. Was the funicular working?

It was. And we missed out. We strolled along the beach, found the Valley Gardens and continued our walk. And before we knew it, we were at the higher level again.

Me too! Lots of lovely memories. I gather the UK got blasted pretty well this week, so I hope they didn’t flood again. Alright where you are?

We, luckily, are fine. Others not so much.

Nooo. I hope all is tolerably well, even so?

He sent photos and Mick didn’t think it looked too serious, but the houses are quite old. They were ‘getting a man out’ today. Unfortunately one of those things that Mick might be able to fix if we lived there. Those awful ifs!

All things considered, I’m not far from tap dancing, Margaret. On second thoughts, I’d only fall in the sink. Still smiling.

Good. I think we’re as bad as each other in the clumsiness department. It’s a pain, isn’t it? Quite literally.

Ah-ha! I do like Saltburn, though.

Agreed! Well do a day-trip one day. With anyone else who fancies it. Jude maybe?

Would be nice. I quite fancy the Thames Barrage and that’s nearer for Jude, but you’re always busy when you’re in London. A bit like me and Leeds but I will make an effort next August. Jude may be coming here next February, if you happened to be free?

I’m not always busy in London, and I can always stay beyond any half-term duties I might have. Oh, you mean Jude’s coming to you? How brilliant! She’ll need a break.

She has been ‘threatening’ for so long, but David wasn’t keen, and then she had the prospect of Alex in Southern Spain. You see why I feel lucky? And I need to keep it going.

An all round good day by the sounds of it. Seems perfect to me. Pity I didn’t pack my Drizabone, too heavy for air travel 🙂

I love watching dogs frolicking on the beach. They don’t care about the weather!

They relish the space, don’t they?

They do, and they’re so joyous.

Are the nearest ones fish balls or fritters or something like that? They look tasty. It is harder to get good fish and chips these days. Whenever I sing our seaside song, my sweetheart starts singing, ‘By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea’ or something similar, which is the one he was brought up with.

They were meant to be fishcakes, and they were highly disappointing. My traditional fish and chips was far better.

The same sea the dinosaurs had? Is it indeed that old? Tastes like it.

Sounds like the perfect British seaside day out! I’ve only visited Saltburn briefly. My father in law was evacuated there at the start of the war (before the street he stayed in was bombed, at which point the children were moved en masse to Yorkshire) and wanted to show us the town. But the weather was so bad the day we went that we only stayed to admire the pier from above! We must go back – I like the look of those beach huts and would enjoy a walk to the end of the pier 🙂

Plenty to enjoy here, such as ginnels which have been reclaimed by those whose back yards give on to them, and have been made into fun places to relax, with bunting, plants and all kinds of ephemera re-purposed as sculpture.

Definitely a great British seaside day out! That pier looks a bit bereft without any buildings on it, but all in all jolly nice

It did seem a bit gaunt, I agree. But it did the job.

I do love the seaside and your photos include everything the ideal day at the seaside should look like. Except perhaps sunshine?

Love beach huts! I don’t recall seeing any on my one and only visit to Saltburn on Sea which must have been around 1994 when I was on holiday with my two youngest sons in Runswick Bay. We stopped to watch surfers who threw themselves off the end of the pier! Saves energy getting out far enough to catch the waves I suppose.

Ooh, no pier-jumping when we were there. I suspect the beach huts may not have a long history, but none the worse for that. I like Runswick Bay too. Time for another visit.

Love those brightly painted beach huts. Are they daily rentals and if so, do they offer amenities?

Here you are! https://marshallsbeachhuts.co.uk/beach-huts/location/saltburn/. I think the price for a sheltered day with hot-drink-making facilities, running water and a couple of deckchairs is very reasonable (£25).
