‘Oh, We do like to be …’

Any Brit could finish this off for you, no trouble. But just in case you aren’t a Brit, and can’t, here are the words of this music hall song, now over a hundred years old.

And last Monday, the seaside was where we went, for a suitably British day out. To Saltburn-by-the-Sea in fact: ex-smuggling centre, and a popular Victorian resort which still has a charmingly olde-worlde air.

There’s the sea itself. People-and-dog-watching…

… beach huts …

… the all-important pier …

… which it’s obligatory to walk to the end of, to look at the sea again …

… the equally obligatory fish-and-chip lunch, preferably overlooking the sea …

… the boats in the small harbour …

… and the header mops up the final necessary sights: two surf-board enthusiasts, and even one seagull.

      1. He sent photos and Mick didn’t think it looked too serious, but the houses are quite old. They were ‘getting a man out’ today. Unfortunately one of those things that Mick might be able to fix if we lived there. Those awful ifs!

      2. Would be nice. I quite fancy the Thames Barrage and that’s nearer for Jude, but you’re always busy when you’re in London. A bit like me and Leeds but I will make an effort next August. Jude may be coming here next February, if you happened to be free?

      3. I’m not always busy in London, and I can always stay beyond any half-term duties I might have. Oh, you mean Jude’s coming to you? How brilliant! She’ll need a break.

      4. She has been ‘threatening’ for so long, but David wasn’t keen, and then she had the prospect of Alex in Southern Spain. You see why I feel lucky? And I need to keep it going.

  1. Are the nearest ones fish balls or fritters or something like that? They look tasty. It is harder to get good fish and chips these days. Whenever I sing our seaside song, my sweetheart starts singing, ‘By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea’ or something similar, which is the one he was brought up with.

  2. Sounds like the perfect British seaside day out! I’ve only visited Saltburn briefly. My father in law was evacuated there at the start of the war (before the street he stayed in was bombed, at which point the children were moved en masse to Yorkshire) and wanted to show us the town. But the weather was so bad the day we went that we only stayed to admire the pier from above! We must go back – I like the look of those beach huts and would enjoy a walk to the end of the pier 🙂

    1. Plenty to enjoy here, such as ginnels which have been reclaimed by those whose back yards give on to them, and have been made into fun places to relax, with bunting, plants and all kinds of ephemera re-purposed as sculpture.

  3. Love beach huts! I don’t recall seeing any on my one and only visit to Saltburn on Sea which must have been around 1994 when I was on holiday with my two youngest sons in Runswick Bay. We stopped to watch surfers who threw themselves off the end of the pier! Saves energy getting out far enough to catch the waves I suppose.

    1. Ooh, no pier-jumping when we were there. I suspect the beach huts may not have a long history, but none the worse for that. I like Runswick Bay too. Time for another visit.

  4. Thanks for coming! By the way, Chrome will not let me access your blog, telling me it has ‘privacy issues’, and hackers may be out to get me. I don’t believe it, but I still can’t read your blog …
