In this week’s Nature Photo Challenge, Denzil has asked us to focus on seedheads. You won’t get any more ripened seeds in one place than in a field of cereal crops awaiting harvest. Here’s a local example in my header photo.
And here are some close-ups of barley and wheat.

And here’s a gallery of their wild cousins – grasses. Not one of which I can more accurately identify. Any offers?

Then there’s cow parsley -or a close relation. It can be yielding its seed, perhaps in the midst of a field of crops round about now, or picturesquely hosting a spider’s web in misty November.

At this time of year too there’s rosebay willow herb: it seems to develop seed pods earlier every year. Here are some at a local reservoir, Grimwith.

And finally and almost inevitably, teasel.

That sky! A rembrance of summers past. The teasel may be inevitable but looks so striking in black and white

I liked it in monochrome too – thanks. And the sky really WAS that blue.

I’m still hoping it will be again. September can be gorgeous.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a field of barley. We have wheat here, already harvested around here, but I don’t think other grain crops. And of course tease. I love to photograph teasel!

Teasel are handsome, aren’t they? Yes, our grain crops are all harvested now, in difficult conditions, and barley is a common one.

Oh yes, there had to be teasels, and that shot is perfect in B&W! Great idea to include cereals too – why didn’t I think of that?! I really like your two close-up shots of the barley and wheat 🙂

Thanks Sarah! You’re obviously home in one piece … unless you’re still in Ripon 😉

Yes, we’re home, although later than expected as the M1 was incredibly busy and slow in places. You can safely recommend the Royal Oak as a place to stay – we slept well and the breakfasts were great!

Pressed enter too soon! Meant to add how lovely it was to see you again and to meet Malcolm – we really enjoyed our evening 🙂

You reminded me of visiting my grandparents farm at harvest time, when the smell of freshly cut grain wafted in the air and the sound of crickets announced the soon to arrive autumn. Lovely photography collection, Margaret.

They are Jo – just. It’s been a tough year, dodging the rain at harvest time. They pretty much finished 10 days ago round here. Good wedding?

Fabulous! Many photos on my WhatsApp but not sure if I’ll share on WP. Still in Durham but travelling south today and feeling sad because it’s last night with James 😪💙

No, I wouldn’t share on WP either, but I wouldn’t mind seeing your photos on WhatsApp! I’m in Newcastle today, so we could wave at one another.

Grasses! I was thinking of a challenge on them. What do you think?

A great idea. Especially if there are experts reading along who can name them for certain ignoramuses like me.
