Mine is not a blog about books: my sole regular contribution is to the monthly discussion about books : ‘Six Degrees of Separation‘. But I’m an avid follower of some book reviewers, and one of my favourites is Kim of Reading Matters. She writes ‘Book reviews of mainly modern & contemporary fiction‘, she’s one of a select band whom I rely on to direct me towards much of what is best in recent writing.
This week, she chose me – me – to feature in her Triple Choice Tuesday. You can read all about it here.
Thanks Kim. I had to think hard about my choices for this post. I’ve enjoyed reading about some of your other featured bloggers, and look forward to more in the weeks to come.

Well done!

Well, of course she did! I’ve not read Mending the Living having not got on with as well with Birth of a Bridge as I’d hoped but I loved Painting Time so I think I should give it a go.

I enjoyed Birth of a Bridge, but it’s not in the same League as Mend the Living at all. I still haven’t read Painting Time. I hope you know, by the way, that you are one of the ‘select band’. Thank you for being such a reliable reviewer!

Ah good. If you find the de Karangal, I hope you enjoy it: whatever language you read it in!

Well done! But you shouldn’t be so surprised – you always write great reviews and I’ve found a number of excellent reads through you. Just started ‘In Memoriam’ for instance 🙂

That’s so lovely to hear. I too tend to take heed of reading suggestions from fellow-bloggers. Simply because we feel we know them and their tastes to some I extent, I suppose.

Congrats!
I haven’t read anything by Kerangal yet, terrible for a French reader

Bien sûr! Given that the very first sentence is over a page long, I think I might struggle in the original French.

Oh, I didn’t even know that was her writing style. I have listened to her during some French TV literary program

I’ll look out for these. I’d be interested to hear her speaking about her work,

Thanks for taking part, Margaret, and reblogging this. It was wonderful to see what you chose and I think sales of a few of these books might now experience a little bump thanks to you bringing them to our attention.

Oooh, I don’t think any of us has that wide a readership, but wouldn’t that be great? Thanks for inviting me – such good questions! They made me think.

Here is the French TV literary program where I have heard Maylis.
Two short excerpts on two of her books:

Brilliant – thanks so much. I’ve already listened to the last link – so interesting: and I look forward to catching upon the other two later today.

So glad you liked them. These two channels are great.
Obviously, if you have a VPN, you can watch La Grande Librairie directly on their TV channel online, every Wednesday evening (or any time after as replay). New host, but same fabulous program:

Ah. Sadly, we have no VPN. We didn’t when we lived in France either. A technical leap too far!

The one I use is basically just $5/month

Ah. We’ll see. We watch so little TV that it may not be worth even that modest sum.

We don’t watch American TV, in fact we do not have a TV.
But this allows me to watch French literary programs and also smart word games

Wow! And all the books will go on my to buy list. I want a good mix and your thoughts on them intrigue me, especially the Communist’s Daughter. Did not seem to be able to comment on the actual blog itself.

Well you have persuaded me to give Mend the Living a go and to dip into that Leon series. It’s many years now since I was last in Italy and I’m suffering withdrawal symptoms
