The parakeets that live round and about Ciutadella Park in Barcelona are opportunists. They know that all they have to do is hang around tourists, looking winsome, and the next meal will appear. If they’re lucky, maybe specially purchased nuts and seeds from equally opportunist street vendors. Otherwise, croissant crumbs and biscuits. They don’t seem fussy.

For Monday Portrait.
Not just the parakeets, birds everywhere seem to have cottoned on where to score.

Wow! Great close ups. My daughter gets parakeets in her garden, but hidden in the trees.

Exactly. I’ve never seen London’s parakeets close up either. She’s near Guildford isn’t she?

Yes. Esher – though hoping to move at the end of the week! Fingers very firmly crossed 🤞

Oh yes. Absolutely everything crossed. You’re staying out of the way?

And very winsome he looks too. A nice change from pigeons.

In their own way, they’re just as much avian street rats as pigeons are. But a bit more disarming!

I change from pigeons, but I still don’t like these birds either…… Not too nice to our resident small birds

I think they hold their own in Barcelona rather better. It’s not a small bird haven

Pretty. I’m sure they stand out in the park. I wonder if the parakeets can be found in other parts of Barcelona, or if the Park is an anomaly. Hope you’re enjoying your time with your grands.

They’re just everywhere, and in London and southern England too. We had a great time in Catalonia, despite the frightful weather and we’ve been home a week now.

They do seem to thrive, don’t they? Great photos, Margaret xx

I think chancers like this are bound to do well. Do you have them round your way too?

We even had them in the park in Hartlepool, back in the day! Occasionally they turn up in woodland here xx

A different species to our London parakeets but not so different in behaviour 😀

I’ve never got near enough to any of London’s parakeets to realise that these in Barcelona are different. You’re quite the ornithologist!

I wouldn’t go that far, but I’ve taken enough photos of them to spot the differences 😀
