It’s our last day in Alsace. Alas. Tomorrow we leave, returning home via friends of Malcolm in northern Germany. We had a day of lakeside walks at le Lac Vert, a hearty meal at a mountain auberge, more walking on bucolic mountain paths, and a final wander round Munster, where we walked into the Catholic parish church and found a wonder of a modern clock,’l’Horloge de la Création’, with no fewer than four faces. A satisfactory last day. If any last day can be satisfactory.

The bonus card for today is a short video of contented cows, their bells tunefully chiming as they grazed. Sadly, they’re not the native black and white cows of the Vosges. But you can’t have everything.
What a beautiful setting! The photos are terrific. Even the cows are happy in a place like this.

I’m so glad the cows around here don’t wear bells! They make enough noise as it is! You seem to have packed a lot into your holiday. Enjoy the drive to the north and a safe journey home.

I could live with cowbells in the next field. Not sure whether ‘enjoy’ is the right word for a long drive. And I’ll catch up with your Brightlingsea post at home. My poorly laptop is driving me nuts!

Looking out of the train window on our way to Lille, I was wondering about a walking holiday in the Alsace and your blog posts have convinced me. Safe journey home

Thank you. There is a lot of variety to be had in walking here, and the activity is well supported by suggestions in tourist offices etc. The only downside is that walking routes can be very patchily signposted. When they’re good, they’re very good. When they’re not, they’re… supply your own critical word. Alsace is no worse in this regard than any other part of France I’ve walked in. Take a compass!

How kind, Margaret! No, I’ve not given up but have not been well and didn’t want to keep moaning to friends on-line. I am halfway through writing a post and just need to add photos. 😊

We went to La Maison du Fromage, which makes it as well as showing excellent exhibitions and demonstrations. We bought several pieces from different producers, but weren’t as captivated as we expected. We both had different and better memories of it.

Interesting…I do find that some washed rind cheeses can taste different depending on which time of the year they are made….

They do indeed. But not THAT different. It was disappointing.

Dear Margaret
We like the idyllic Alsace as well. And the food and drink there, and last but not least, the Isenheimer Altarpiece.
Thanks for showing your fine photos

Ah yes. That altarpiece, and so much more from the Unterlinden collection. I’ll write more about all that in due course. Alsace continued to surprise us. In a good way.

Hi Margaret – I have been catching up. I have really enjoyed your series of postcards from Alsace. What a beautiful and fascinating place to visit, and it seems you had a wonderful holiday there. It was good of you to make time to share while travelling!

I make that time because it makes a souvenir for us too. So easy to forget the whys and wherefore if it’s just a big bag of photos. Thank you for reading this little lot.
