The featured image, spotted in Buxton, in England’s Peak District sets the tone. Here is is, a cheery chappy, just waiting to receive your letter. If you write letters any more ….

Then there’s our local post box, still with an image painted on the wall behind dating from 2014, the year we moved here, and the year that the Tour de France started in Yorkshire, and passed through the village. And in a nearby village, the box dates from the reign of Queen Victoria. Look! ‘VR’: Victoria Regina. And finally, a box spotted last autumn topped off with yarn bombing for Hallowe’en.
For Becky’s #SimplyRed Squares.
I love these, they just brighten up an otherwise dull box 😊

At least they’re red. I can’t be doing with other nations thinking yellow or green is acceptable. I rather feel that buses should be red too.

And cricket players should play in white too (when did they introduce coloured kit)???

Well, quite. Our village side has some Standards. They play in white.

And so they should ☺️

I love the toppers. Post boxes here are singularly unimaginative, but I do rather like the yellow ones in Spain. Reminds me of when my other half was young and smiley xx

They’re yellow in France too. It’s just … wrong xx

I’m not going to knock the yellow postboxes here, I’m so grateful they still exist and that there is one in my residence outside the boulangerie. Vive la France! 🇫🇷💌📮

Oh yes, Vive la France. And vive la boîte aux lettres … rouge 😉.

I used to be good at knitting and following complicated patterns, but haven’t the patience for it now. And I never figured out crochet other than squares.

Whereas I can (but don’t) crochet, and can’t knit at all.

I still write notes and send postcards. Hoping to use a bright one soon! Trying to pass the love of letters through mail to another generation. Lovely red!

It IS a good red. And yes, the last letter I posted through a pillar box ‘mouth’ was indeed a birthday card last week.

No mailboxes around here now. In fact even post offices are few and far between. But those in this post are beauties with character

They’re good, aren’t they? We have just as many mail boxes as ever, but now, they only collect once a day. It used to be 4-5 or even more.

Letter Mail only delivered every second day here. But parcels delivered daily. A clear sign of changing times

Although it is policy that no post box is removed for reasons of under utilisation I’m sure, eventually, there will be a move to start getting rid of them, just as telephone boxes are now much in decline!

I think you’re right Peter. When I use a post box, I often hear a ‘thunk’ as my envelope hits the metal on the bottom. It’s clearly the only one there.

I really enjoyed this post, Margaret! Every time I visit the UK, I make a point of looking out for these wonderful red post boxes—they always seem to turn up in the most unexpected places. I’ve even started taking photos of them wherever I go. There’s something so charming and iconic about them.
