A Quiet Bench

Near Fountains Hall, the early Jacobean house in the grounds of Fountains Abbey, a new garden has recently been opened. The Quiet Garden. It is indeed a peaceful haven. My favourite feature is this bench, made from the wood of now-fallen trees in Studley Royal’s deer park.

And in case you’ve not seen it before, here is Fountains Hall.

  1. That garden sounds like a lovely addition to Fountains Abbey 🙂 The bench is unusual – I’m trying to decide if I like it. But I definitely like the fact that they made use of the wood from the fallen trees!

  2. I agree with Bush Boy, it does look ‘prehistoric.’ What a wonderful use for old trees from the grounds. The Fountains Abbey looks like an inviting place to spend an afternoon, especially that bench.

  3. I agree with BB. It does look prehistoric, but the question is “is it comfortable?” I would actually love to sit in the Quiet Garden surrounded by that lovely planting, with a good book. As long as it isn’t too hot!

    1. There are no jagged bits, Peter. It’s beautifully finished off. I dare say you ae ‘reading’ the darker streaks of wood as jagged, but I assure you, you could sit there in your silk pyjamas (Hmm. P’raps best not if you don’t seek unwanted attention).

  4. What a peaceful and meaningful spot, Margaret. I love that the bench was crafted from the wood of fallen trees in the deer park—it feels like a quiet conversation between the past and the present, gently held in nature. Thank you for sharing this serene corner of the world. I can almost hear the stillness.
