This week, for the Lens-Artists Challenge, Ritva urges us to show what happens when we break the established rules – well – guidelines really, in photography. So I went out for a walk that very evening intent on doing so: and took this shot directly into the sun.

I quite like it. But then rules are made to be broken.
But they’re there for purpose. ‘Don’t take shots through a window’, they say. Well, you can see why in the next two shots. But I like them both: one for its evocation of a typical English keep-your-coat-on sort of day at the seaside: the other for showing that on some days, staying behind a protective wall of glass really is the only option.

And when it comes to wildlife… well, wildlife hasn’t heard the rules, and doesn’t either stand still, hover or otherwise mark time: Especially Arctic tern with eggs and offspring to guard. So you take what you can get.

‘Don’t take photos through glass AND from a moving train.’ Well, why not? Newcastle at night …

Finally, I recently took this photo in – or around – Masham Church. I haven’t a clue where exactly I was or what was going on, so I must have broken every rule in the book.

But I don’t care.
Bad attitude!….. laughing. Happy weekend, Margaret xx

We have had our share of bad weather here too and looking and taking photos is a thing for me too. I really like the one at the coast, it actually tells a story. And wildlife is not for the impatient one like me, so I would and do break the rules if there are any – well there are the composition ones, but to achieve them is another thing. Great shots. Continue the same way…

I love shots through a window. I have a great one of my daughter reflected in trees outside. Stuff the rules.

ExACTly. Yes, these shots are often freighted with memories.

A bit of ruie-breaking isn’t always a bad thing as you’ve demonstrated. That car shot feels so familiar!

Sadly, a common sight. Though to be fair, not just now. Drought Rules.

You’ve always struck me as a bit of a rule breaker so I’m not surprised that you don’t care. And I’m glad that you don’t: this is another fab collection! The header photo is superb.

Thanks Sandra. I’m fond of those tern portraits, even though they clearly weren’t fond of me.

When the results are great, ‘who cares?’ 😊

We’re all allowed a week off. And maybe you never break the rules!

You’ve proved that rules are made to be broken! I love the tern shots, they really capture the aggression of the birds 😲 The window ones are very effective too, especially the rainy one, and I also love the abstract look of your last shot.

I do too, that last one, and I CANNOT remember how or quite where it came about (other than it was Masham Church/churchyard, given the photos that surrounded it). And it wasn’t even very long ago. What a memory, eh?

Rules are meant to be broken, especially around the aggressive birds. The one looks like its about to attack! Maggie

Oh, they were! I have other photos of them actually attacking people’s hats (we were instructed to wear headgear) because they didn’t want anyone messing with their young.

An imperfection photo indoors can be edited in a way to make it more appealing to the viewer. Plus there’s always an opportunity to take the same photos from different angles multiple times.

Of course! But I think the point here was to show photos that broke the rules, but we got away with it anyway. Unlike many bloggers whom I follow, I don’t get a kick out of editing, except the most basic touches like cropping or levelling the photo. If that’s not enough … I junk it.

Excellent photos, Margaret. I really like the photos through the windows. They look like double exposures.

And we don’t care either Margaret because the results in all cases are wonderful! My favorite is the car through the rain (or wherever that water came from!) It’s fantastic!!

Great photo candidates. I like the one through the window of the couple on the bench very much. Last one of the different textures is also very nice.

Thank you! By the way, Tuesday 13th ended up with our sitting in the hospital A&E dept. for hours and hours. All is well now, but the 13th didn’t want to be taken for granted.
