We arrived back home yesterday afternoon – and by gum, it’s cold. Brrrr. A house in January, unlived in for a month, is Not The Place To Be. So I’ll warm myself up by showing you some pictures of a town we enjoyed visiting for just a couple of hours on our last day.
It’s Vitré, a town in Brittany that still has not only an impressive castle, but a preserved town centre dating from mediaeval times. It was both a prosperous trading centre for wool and woollen goods, and a bit of a military hotspot. That castle, commanding from its hilltop site views all over the Vilaine valley below saw frequent military action.
Today, the town is charming, picturesque – and wonkily geometric. Just enjoy a quick stroll round its narrow streets with me:

Do you think Rapunzel lived in the dwelling below?

A couple more streets, and a charming decorative detail beneath a window …

…. and finally, the castle.

We didn’t visit the castle or the museum housed there – they were both closed. A good enough excuse to go back another time and explore a little longer.
Dear Margaret, I hope your home to be warm as soon as possible. I know how it was… This Vitre houses so beautiful, I loved your photographs. Thank you, Have a nice day, Love, nia

What a lovely place you’ve found, Margaret! I’ll have to look on the map, though we’ll not get back to that part of the world (the couple we visited have ‘moved on!’) Somebody, somewhere has been selling a job lot of those capital letters! They’re all over our beaches! Thank goodness for central heating though…

We don’t have central heating …. I didn’t realise those capital letters were everywhere. The first I’ve seen.

Oh, no!!! Storage heaters, then…
And someone is making a nice profit from them.

They were here when we took up the tenancy and actually we’ve learned to use them well. And at least we pay cheaper night-rate for all electricity used by them. They’re no good at sponteneity though.

Wow! What a beautiful place. I clearly need to explore more of Brittany. I have only seen the coast, which is beautiful too.
Glad you’re back safe but oh for heat spontaneity!

Almost warm now thanks! Maybe you could do a little escape there on one of your Parisian sorties? Ooops, p’raps not. It’s 315 km ….

We do sometimes talk about having a day out of the city but that sounds a bit too far for a day trip perhaps!

Definitely. But that whole area might justify a weekend escape?

I’m sure it would – if only we could tear ourselves away from Paris!
