Any UK readers will have had plenty of occasions to recite a favourite childhood ditty this week.
Rain, rain, Go to Spain,
James Howell, an Anglo-Welsh historian added this verse to the traditional English rhyme ‘Rain, rain go away/Come again another day’, as a reminder of the failed invasion of the powerful Spanish Armada in 1588. They had intended to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and restore Catholic rule over England.
Never show your face again.
Like now, for instance. But we’re all safely indoors, so let’s peer out at a few rainy shots. I hope you have an umbrella.
Count the brollies in these two shots, and they’ll add up to seven.

And here is an all-too-typical English shot.

For Leanne’s Monochrome Madness.
And Becky’s Seven for September.
I had no idea what the history was of that saying, I remember saying it as a child.
So many brollies, wet days can be fun.

Wet days here at the moment are NOT fun. Too many of them, and too much rain!

Sounds like here a bit. We are getting too much.

Love the last one in black and white. I remember an alternative we used to say “come on mother’s washing day” which seems rather mean now.

I’ve never heard that one before. Very mean, in a way the one about Spain isn’t, except in the north-west. They’d love a bit more rain!

I do occasionally wield an umbrella, but it is mostly in the UK. I really like the last one and also remember the washing day version, too xx

Ah, odd, as all three of us had our early childhood relatively close to one another. I wielded an umbrella today too, reminding myself why I don’t like them. Almost lost it twice.

Love the brollies and the wet Spanish street. Think it has just rained there but madness for me in London on Monday. Not leaves on the line- water, water everywhere and not a train in sight!

That sounds about right. Often the story of my life as I reach London too.

I like the term brollies. Beautiful monochrome photos.

Oh, don’t you say ‘brollies’? Do you have a different word?

Occasionally we say ‘brella, but mostly the whole word, umbrella. I think I’ll adopt brollies!

Too often needed this summer! Though not when the rain is accompanied by rain.

As it most certainly was yesterday.

Though I actually meant accompanied by wind!

Well, we had that too …

I guess the Tudor bits of the verse never took hold here.

Possibly not! Plus, like Spain, you probably appreciate the rain when you have it.

Sometimes. But we do have a bit of unseasonal rain this week. I guess that’s not a phrase that describes weather in the UK

These photos of rainy days are beautiful in black and white. We also had some rain a couple of days ago, and we can use more. 🙂

I am so grateful for the person who invented umbrellas. The first purchase I made when we moved to Vancouver, Canada was an umbrella. LOL!

I am useless with umbrellas. I leave them wherever I go. Or, deciding to have another go, as I did yesterday, break the spokes.

Ah brollies. Not a term used much here in South Africa. We have had lots of rain here this winter, but generally its far too windy for brollies. One even has to tie-down one’s hat!

Ah. Last time I ventured out with a brolly, the wind broke one of the spokes, But for once I didn’t lose it.
