Quite often, if you want your plants to burgeon, you need to cossett them into life by starting their lives off as seeds in a pot. Here are some Victorian plant pots from Harlow Carr Gardens that must have chivvied generations of plants into health and colourfulness.

Lovely old plant pots, Margaret. So much more pleasing than plastics.

I love terracota pots. Sadly, many garden centres are in love with the plastic variety.

Cheap, but not cheerful 😦

There’s something about terracotta pots. And when they’re found in such a place as this they’re all the more beautiful.

I love seeing stacks of old terracotta pots, and covet the ones Minty Don has, but good ones can be atrociously expensive. I have a good collection of bowls for my spring bulbs and pelargoniums always look best in terracotta.

I always have flash backs to the 16 to 19 year old ponderer when I see mention of Harlow Carr, having lived along Penny Pot Lane!

I too love these old terracotta pots – and I can never look at them without thinking of Bill and Ben (and thereby showing my age!)

Haha! Good point. I rarely saw them as we didn’t have TV.

Nor did we, but my grandfather who lived downstairs (we had the top flat) had one and I would go down there for Watch with Mother 🙂

I love the layers of colour in this photo. The old wood and the ?water marks on those gorgeous old pots. Bernie

Victorian, wow! They have survived well. And Sarah’s comment made me think of Bill and Ben too. And Little Weed of course.
