Herons World-Wide(ish)

Over at Don’t hold your Breath, IJ Khanewala features an Indian Pond Heron as his Bird of the Week. I remarked to him that herons get everywhere. And here’s the proof. I can’t claim to show examples from anything like every continent, much less every country where you’ll find herons, but here are just a few.

This one was after an easy catch in our landlord’s garden and noticed by our trail camera.

These are all from England: click on an image to find out where.

These two come from Spain, from l’Albufera near Valencia, and from Córdoba.

Dordrecht in the Netherlands
Lake Prespa in Greece (but it’s an egret?)

And the featured image comes from Busan in South Korea.

Not exactly a world-wide survey. But I go a small way towards proving my point.

  1. Let me see whether I can recognize any. From the UK you have the grey heron and the great blue. We see the first one in India, but not the second. I think the rest of them are probably grey herons too, except the for the one from Greece. I don’t recognize it, and the black bill and yellow legs does not match egrets that I know.

  2. You’re right, herons do seem to get everywhere! I love seeing them, especially in flight. But here, as others have said, the star is definitely the one in Cordoba, with the colours reflected in the water where he stands!

  3. Glad I came looking for you. You haven’t appeared in my Reader this week and I thought you must be busy in the aftermath of your trip. I love the stillness of them, full of intent.

    1. Ah, thanks. WP thinks it knows better than us who our blogging pals are, doesn’t it? Yes, I love the focus of a heron. I could do with a touch of that concentration myself.

  4. Wonderful photos of herons. I like the one from your landlord’s garden. Surprisingly good, considering it is taken by trail camera; The photo from l’Albufera is lovely as well, I love all the colours of the water.
