Monday Portrait: the Goats at Mudchute Farm

The other day I showed you the thieving squirrels of Mudchute Farm in London’s Isle of Dogs. Today it’s the turn of the thieving goats. Mind your scarves! The goats find them delicious.

  1. Second time around, Margaret! The quote “They’ll eat anything” by A Life in Books had we going down a rabbit hole. How can goats eat everything!! Here is what I found:

Goats have a unique digestive system that allows them to eat a wide variety of plants and materials. Their ability to consume such a diverse diet is due to their specialized stomach, which consists of four chambers: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. This complex digestive system enables goats to break down and extract nutrients from fibrous plant materials that other animals cannot digest. They also have a highly developed sense of taste and are naturally curious, which may contribute to their tendency to explore and consume different types of vegetation. What I found most interesting was that goats are known to be browsers, meaning they prefer to eat leaves, twigs, and shrubs rather than grass. This preference for a varied diet allows them to adapt to different environments and survive in areas with limited food resources.

And now I’m coming out of the rabbit hole.
