Ooh, Sheree, you have been missing from the UK a long time. It’s been in Woolwich since 1982 to prevent Londoners from flooding. It’s a fantastic structure and I wish now I’d posted a fuller image since you’re not alone in not knowing it, apparently. I may have to put that right soon.
My comment referred to Was it the Thames Barrier? As the title didn’t pop up in my reader. I left UK for good at start of 2005 and I’m never, ever going back.
That looks formidable – so massive and bulky.

It’s quite striking. I tend to think it’s better known – maybe I’ll post more images another day.

Ah, I see. And you do right. It’s not the country you left. Enoch Powell would come over as a moderate these days.

Thanks Kim. So far, I’ve only seen it once. But it made quite an impression on me too.

I’m not sure what it does, maybe I should look it up.

I’m going to do another post soon Dawn. It’s not as well known as I thought as a flood-prevention measure.

At first I did not know what it was or what it did. But reading the comments solved that. It’s quite a piece of work.

I was silly to think that its purpose would be well known. I’m going to do a slightly longer post to put that right, very soon.

I’m going for half term, but no pleasure trips with friends this time, as I’m on Granny Duty. But I’ll come again soon!

Ah I’m going the other way at half term, and heading up north!

Shall we pass each other en route? I’m off in the last full week of October.

It’s a wonderful structure and I’m so glad you shared it, Margaret.

I didn’t realise it had been so long either. I wonder what took ME so long to get to see it?
