My first sighting of a red squirrel was one boldly walking across my path in Helsinki botanical gardens which are slap bang in the middle of the city! I’ve seen them since several times when travelling in Central Europe and it’s always a thrill.
I haven’t seen a red squirrel in the UK for years. I spotted one decades ago in the Lake District, but none since. There are some around Kielder but we’ve had no luck so far.
I just love the tufty ears of the red squirrels. I’m sure there are some in a garden here in Cornwall – in a very large aviary type of cage, and I have seen them in Scotland. A shame the greys pass on that virus, not their fault, and they are handsome creatures.
Go to a German cemetery and you will see lots and lots of red squirrels (except in Munich, they have the black variety there). They love the big trees, and the quiet. And no dogs.
Oh, the old ones are really interesting places. In Munich, I was waiting for my husband and spent some time in the Alte Südfriedhof. The newest graves were at least 50 years, more like 100 years old. It was a quiet atmosphere but there were people strolling, with or without prams, joggers, people eating their lunch … and lots of squirrels!
I stand corrected. And in fact last year had a lovely time strolling round one in North Germany last year. I was so impressed by what a flower-filled and cared for delight it was.
Aww, they are sweet. I like how the last one has crossed ears! We have lots of squirrels in the London parks, but I’ve actually stopped paying much attention to them, which is a shame.
It’s true – squirrels are not in short supply. Even though I’m sorry the grey have obliterated the red here, I’m still charmed by them, and often stop to look at what they’re up to.
The third photo is really lovely. You can certainly see where Beatrix Potter’s inspiration for Squirrel Nutkin came from. Somehow not so much the average grey, city park dwellers.

It is, isn’t it? I’ve only once seen one in the UK, and that was in Scotland.

He looks cold! I’ve seen them frolicking in Lazienki Park in Warsaw. A lovely memory 🐿 💖

Ah, I saw them in Poland too, in a park in Nowa Huta.

Yes. Where we lived in France, the red squirrels there were virtually black. Is that the case where you are?

Yes, ours are small and practically black

It’s those tails and whiskers isn’t it that makes them so adorable

Yes. Just general whiskery charm.

The reds always look so fluffy!

Yes, definitely the prettier of the two types.

Aw, little red is lovely. Only spotted greys here in Wiltshire, but in Germany we saw a lot of red and almost blacks. Always a pleasure to spot!

Aren’t they always a charming addition to the day?

No, nor us. Sefton Park in Liverpool is supposed to have some, but not if I’m there.

That was good to see them one after another. No red here but the grey have been busy with the bulbs!🙃

Pesky grey squirrels. They’re fond of crocus, aren’t they?

Certainly like digging up tulip bulbs.

It’s not their fault. They’re quite nice in their own right, but not as winsome as the reds.

German cemeteries aren’t normally my thing. But I’ll bear it in mind – thanks!

I know. They can’t help being less charming, those grey squirrels. But they do have a certain appeal too, for lack of anything better,

Those tails really cover up a bad hair day.
