We popped to Bamburgh yesterday afternoon to enjoy views of the castle and a healthy stride along the beach. What greeted us was the group of photographers in the featured photo, all pointing their lenses out to sea. It turns out they were all twitchers, alerted by some bird-enthusiast-bush-telegraph to the presence of a bird whose home is normally North America and Canada: the White Winged Scoter. We couldn’t see it. It was too far out to sea.
Here’s a view of the Castle. Other castles are available in Northumberland. I’ll be reporting back later.

I thik I’ll be cheeky and make this a late entry to Debbie’s One Word Sunday challenge: Shadows.
It looks like a grand day!

It was great. I’ve yet to report on our bizarre morning.

I love the photograph of this perfect line of photographers. Makes me wonder: What’s the collective noun for a group of them? A click-clique?

Great as twitchers are a clicky clique!

Indeed they are!

Click-clique is giood. A paparazzo of photographers? Who knows ….?

This is hilarious. Can I share it with a birder friend of mine?
PS: I’ve been there. I hardly ever get to say that underneath one of your photos.
PPS: I can’t see the castle … ?

I can’t see a photo of the castle either 🤔

One of life’s unsolved mysteries. The photo was there, in my media library, but in my draft appears as a crossed out photo. Who knows? Do share the photo – I have others too. So glad you’ve been to Bambrugh!

Your castle of Bamburgh is my derelict hut, it seems. 🙄

That is what happens around here as well. Is the castle a little blob in the distance?

No, the castle would have been behind Margaret as she took this shot, and it’s far too impressive to ever look like a little blob!

Bamburgh is THE most impressive castle, isn’t it?

Nope. See my reply to Elke above … Twitchers eh? Who’d join them?

A rare sighting. How exciting!

They were far too far away to see, unless you had mega-lenses.

Bamburgh and the beach is a great place. Hopefully you can enjoy without storms but as a youngster visiting I was always impressed by Grace Darling. Poor old scoter blown over to these shores!

The storms arrived today and we’ve come home this morning instead of making a day of it. Lucky you to have childhood memories of Bamburgh.

Hope all ok. We have finally got the sun back here after arriving to lots and lots of rain.

All OK thanks. Rain in Spain? But you need it don’t you?

We do bit certainly there has been a lot this year. For which we must be truly grateful.

Indeed. Send some to Barcelona.

Must be Atlantic winds bringing this. And warm seas. My visits to Barcelona were often cloudy and some rain. Lots of changes.

The photo of the twitchers made me smile but I’m another one who can’t see the castle!

Sorted now. Between WP and posting from my phone, it all went wrong – the photo was in the media gallery so who knows?

Glad it’s sorted – that’s a castle that deserves to be seen!

and where is the promised castle?
when I lived in Devon, I learned many a funny expression for ‚only English people‘ dos and don‘ts, such as anoracks, birders, and more. Now I can add twitchers…. I find those words so funny!

See my noted above about the castle shot. Yep, we English have a way with slightly derogatory collective nouns!

I see the castle has reappeared! It’s a beauty. Did you go inside? We did. Fascinating collections of silver if I remember correctly.

Having done 2 castles in 2 days (One a big mistake – more later), and not getting there till the afternoon, we didn’t. Another time.

The castle looks majestic, like something out of a fairytale. Your picture of all the photographers is quite amusing, I wonder if they managed to see the White Winged Scoter.

I think they probably did. They seemed rapt.

Ahhhhh, I’m laughing here. Once I was looking for a bald eagle that had been reported to be in a certain vicinity, and I was driving around this island looking for it. I came around a corner and there were maybe 30 cars and photographers, all with huge lenses and tripods all pointed in the same direction and sure enough there was the eagle sitting up on a huge dead tree limb. He looked quite regal and was watching all the craziness below him as if we were nuts. Which we were.

oh, what larks….Twitchers along with Morris Dancers fall into my category of Odd People…. Anyway, I do agree that “Bamburgh is THE most impressive castle”…..sadly, I have lost the only image I took 40 years ago…..
