The Biggest Easter Egg You’ll See This Year?

Almost anyone who visits Harrogate considers that taking morning coffee or afternoon tea at Betty’s is part of the deal. This iconic part of the town has been here since 1919, and has the reputation of being thoroughly civilised, with the highest standards. Whatever you choose to eat or drink will be delicious, and elegantly served. But it’ll cost you.

Something else that could cost you is the egg that forms a traditional part of its display every Easter. It weighs in at over 5 kg. but could be yours for £375. You can read all about it here.

  1. That is one impressive Easter egg! I think, the couple of small ones I had this Easter are better for the health, though 😉

  2. Susan’s comment on the five year old being obsessed makes me think these oversize chocolate products are aimed to ensure children beg their parents for Easter eggs.

There’s a very funny anecdote in the book I just finished The Girl in the Tunnel by Maureen Sullivan about an oversized bar of chocolate in the local grocery store, how she and her two brothers obsessed over it for weeks, until…and the rest i wouldn’t wish to spoil for anyone who might wish to read it! 🍫

    1. Ah well, I wonder? In fact, though this egg is made from chocolate, and lots of it, it’s inedible, because covered in varnish to protect it, and decorated with non-edible icing. A shocking waste, really.

    1. I know! Chocolate’s far too expensive to waste! I thought they could make it out of - well, anything really – papier mache? There are plenty of clever paints around these days.

  3. £375 for an egg is quite a price! I wonder if they have any takers? Can you be bah humbug about Easter, or is that just Christmas? Because Easter eggs to me are a waste: a lot of packaging with very little chocolate! Give me a bar of Lindt 90% any day. But then grumpy old woman I guess is not the demographic they are aiming for.

    1. Agreed. We never give or receive Easter eggs for the reasons you point out. Lindt has in the past been at the centre of allegations round using child labour, so I never buy from them. I need to re-visit this however, as they may have cleaned up their act. It’s a nightmare, the chocolate market.

      1. I did reply to this, but it vanished, so apologies if you get it twice. I’m sorry to read that about Lindt and will have to check if it’s still true and look for something more ethical if so. In the meantime I can tuck into the 4 bars I already have!

  4. According to media reports this weekend the price of chocolate is going to go up next year so maybe we will have to take out a bank loan to buy something this big??
