Over at Don’t hold your Breath, IJ Khanewala features an Indian Pond Heron as his Bird of the Week. I remarked to him that herons get everywhere. And here’s the proof. I can’t claim to show examples from anything like every continent, much less every country where you’ll find herons, but here are just a few.
These are all from England: click on an image to find out where.
These two come from Spain, from l’Albufera near Valencia, and from Córdoba.
And the featured image comes from Busan in South Korea.
Not exactly a world-wide survey. But I go a small way towards proving my point.
Let me see whether I can recognize any. From the UK you have the grey heron and the great blue. We see the first one in India, but not the second. I think the rest of them are probably grey herons too, except the for the one from Greece. I don’t recognize it, and the black bill and yellow legs does not match egrets that I know.

Oh, thanks for that. You are the birder, so I’m grateful for your input. Yes, grey herons are the default position in the UK.

Lovel shots, particularly the close up showing off that frothy edge of delicate plumage. I’m very fond of herons. We have quite a few of them locally.

I noticed your fondness for herons in your own post today. Me too. The river here is often shallow enough for protruding rocks to offer a fishing perch.

They have stiff competition from cormorants here which does make me a little optimistic about the state of our river given their voracious appetite.

That seems a good sign.

Love the one with the coloured reflections – Cordoba?

Yup. Have you visited there? Great city!

No. Had a day trip to Seville from the Algarve many years ago and loved that city, but not made it to Cordoba.

I loved it even more than Seville – and easier to get away from those pesky tourists too!

Fabulous! I think the black bill and yellow legged varieties are Little Egrets.

Thanks Peter. I can’t venture an opinion, but see IJK’s comment.

I’m with Jude, the shot of the Cordoba heron is stunning with those reflections. A fine collection!

That was such a fabulous evening, on the Roman bridge over the Guadalquivir, looking at the water life.

You’re right, herons do seem to get everywhere! I love seeing them, especially in flight. But here, as others have said, the star is definitely the one in Cordoba, with the colours reflected in the water where he stands!

Ah, that was such a wonderful evening. It was one of the experiences making Córdoba one of my all-time favourite cities.

We were just watching one perched in a tree overhanging the canal earlier this afternoon. They always seem rather aloof.

Of corse they’re aloof. Very superior beings I think.

Glad I came looking for you. You haven’t appeared in my Reader this week and I thought you must be busy in the aftermath of your trip. I love the stillness of them, full of intent.

Ah, thanks. WP thinks it knows better than us who our blogging pals are, doesn’t it? Yes, I love the focus of a heron. I could do with a touch of that concentration myself.

Wonderful photos of herons. I like the one from your landlord’s garden. Surprisingly good, considering it is taken by trail camera; The photo from l’Albufera is lovely as well, I love all the colours of the water.

That one is actually from Córdoba. It was a magical experience, viewing the water that evening.

this sample collection is as good a point as any. and of course, the quality of the sample size you’ve collected and shared here is what makes me biased 😀

It’s an adaptable bird. In other matters, inspiration hasn’t struck yet for this month’s poetry challenge. Must take a grip!
