I, too, love that library and have visited every time I have been to Liverpool.

A very welcome welcome to October squares . . . and what a marvellous dome. I’ve not made it into the library, clearly it is time for me to visit Liverpool again!

Fascinating photos and always interesting to see a successful contemporary building project working well with what remained of the original and also within all the surrounding Victorian civic grandeur.

I think they’ve done it really well. It includes two much older libraries, the Picton and the Hornby, which retain all of their gracious British Library feel.

That’s amazing architecture! Your photos make me feel a little off-balance–do you feel that way in the actual building?

It feels spacious and energising. It has a really exciting vibe to it. But off-balance? Luckily, no

I know what Kerry means about feeling off-balance; those angles are discombobulating. (I’ve long wanted to use that word!) But the place looks remarkable and you’ve captured it so well.

Peering at it from odd angles is discombobulating (yeah! Love it too!) but less so in real life. It’s just an energetic space: with quiet corners for reading and studying too.

I haven’t been to the Central Library for decades. You’ve prompted me to correct that next time I get a chance, although it might make me feel wistful. Access to a really fine library is one of the perks of city living.

It is. Liverpool is my husband’s home town, and the library was where he studied during vacations. He’s found it greatly changed, but he liked it as it was, and likes it as it is.

I feel much the same.

Even if none of Led Zeppelin’s members were born in Liverpool, the last image reminds me of “Stairway to Heaven”…

Thanks! It seems an odd thing to say, but I’d include the library on a list of tourist must-sees for Liverpool.

The library didn’t look like this when I was at Liverpool Poly in 1980! It looks fabulous!

No, Malcolm’s found it hugely changed too from the days when he grew up here – long before 1980. Lots and lots of changes since then – and since 1980 too!

The only trouble is because I do live here there are so many fabulous places and buildings here you just don’t visit anywhere near enough.

It’s always the way when you live in a place. Invite a friend from afar and be a tour guide!
