‘One misty-moisty morning, when cloudy was the weather…..’

Today was indeed a misty morning.  Ripon has no fewer than three rivers in town, and a canal too, and one of those three rivers, the Ure, passes our back door.  So it’s no surprise that we do ‘misty-moisty’ mornings, evenings and nights on a regular basis.

But mistiness is no excuse not to walk the mile and a half along the Ure to visit the village shop at West Tanfield to buy a Sunday paper.  Here’s my journey:

This is how the old nursery rhyme goes:

One misty, moisty morning,

When cloudy was the weather,

I chanced to meet an old man clothed all in leather.

He began to compliment, and I began to grin,

How do you do, and how do you do?

And how do you do again?

Though I didn’t meet any old men clothed all in leather, I did meet quite a few dog-walkers.  And quite pleasant chats were had with nearly all of them

  1. ………very special pre-winter feeling on your slide show, lovely walking through misty fields, coming back into a cosy lounge, sitting and reading in front of a chimney fire………..annaxx

  2. That’s funny Margaret, we walked the one and a half miles from the opposite direction to get the Sunday papers! Tried to put Linda’s tuition into practise as we passed the bird hides.
Your pictures are lovely as always.

  3. I had to laugh at your title–the same phrase has been running through my head for days, because of the weather we’ve been having! Those lines were also recorded as a song by Steeleye Span. Your photos do a wonderful job of conveying the peace and quiet of the walk.

  4. As ever lovely, atmospheric photos made extra special because they remind me of my Yorkshire childhood. Currently I can barely walk up the garden path but I have, some say stubbornly, abandonned my crutches. I shall tackle driving next week when Jeremy is around to take over if necessary. We’ve just had to cancel a week in A-V which is very disappoiting as we were really looking forward to some mountain air.

    1. Oh! You poor thing. And for having to give up the pre-Christmas break in A-V too. We’re hoping to be in LdO for New Year, which will be fun, but a great run-about too, trying to see everyone, AND fit in a trip to Barcelona to see Emily. Do get well soon. Chin up!
