A Group of Goats posing for Monday Portraits

I know it’s not a Group of Goats. It’s a Flock; it’s a Herd; it’s a Drove (as in the header photo); it’s a Tribe. But Group is more alliterative.

On our Balkan journey, we got used in Albania to seeing shepherds wandering along the mountainsides with their mixed herds of sheep and goats.

In Greece though, we stayed on a small island, Agios Achillios, on Lake Prespa. Semi-nomadic practices weren’t an option. Instead the goats had to put up with lush and varied pasture on hillsides overlooking the lake, which they shared with their neighbours the pigs and the dwarf cattle of the area, and who may have their moment of fame another week.

  1. Great photos. Reads and looks like you had a great vacation. Your photos bring life to your adventure. With all of the goat, sheep, and cattle; what was your favorite meal on your trip?

  2. I am fascinated by goats going back to my childhood and the story of Three Billy Goats Gruff” which I have read that comes from a Norwegian fairy tale collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe in their Norske Folkeeventyr, first published between 1841 and 1844. Thanks for the great post and follow-up conversation.

    1. So you had a childhood fascinated with the Billy Goats Gruff! So did my younger daughter. No country walk was possible without finding a suitable place for a troll to emerge and frighten us all to death!

  3. Now they are really lovely and sensible too, sitting in the shade. Mind you their fleeces look quite cosy, I wonder what they do in a heatwave? Hope you’ve not been too sweltering.

    1. The most astonishing thing we saw on our Albanian sortie was a group of itinerant very woolly sheep taking their midday break on a super-hot day by huddling closely together in full sun. So thick coats on goats? No problem.
