Well, Thessaloniki has a long and distinguished ancient history taking in Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman civilisations. And what do I show you first? Street art – and one graffito. From the sublime …

I remember reading somewhere about the street art in Thessalonika. Proof positive!

Interesting. Although we ranged far and wide, we didn’t see that much. These photos represent more than half our total.

I suppose that street art is quite in-yer-face when you do come across it!

I think that Street Art is quite ‘in yer face’ as you put it, Margaret!

It is. But Thessaloniki, being big and brash, can take it.

I suspected that might be the case….and especially in the modern (?Brutalist) parts….

A fun reference to Grand Hotel Budapest as well

Some really vivid pictures there! I like the phoenix (?) from the lady’s hat. Is that your dog in the picture?

Nope, we’re not dog owners. And if we were, I don’t think our month of travelling would have suited one bit!

Love the lady with her phoenix on the side of the high rise- the building makes quite the canvas.

I did too. And try as I might, I couldn’t get far enough back to include the full building.

There is beauty and art everywhere, we just have to be looking. Love the rocket ship being moved by the sea..enjoy your day. Homeward bound for a week, the back to the lake and the blue space. Peace.

A lot of it was. This is only a sample.

I have always marvelled at how the artists keep the perspective over such a large area!

Exactly. And often in narrow streets were they can’t stand well back.

Hi Margaret, I agree with most of your readers about the lady with her hat. I’ve been thinking recently about the artwork on that grand scale and how difficult it must be to do. I’d be scared to death painting up that high. You couldn’t step back to inspect your work. You couldn’t ask someone else unless you had your phone. I’m getting dizzy just thinking about it. Whew. Thanks for joining in this week. I enjoyed it so much.

Thanks Marsha. Street art is easier to enjoy than actually to paint I think!

Amen to that! Art has to be from the heart because most of it is very time intensive. It’s like writing – which is an art, of course. But it takes so much more time to write than to read it.

Ah – don’t I know it.

The girl and phoenix street art is powerful and evocative and I read it is a work on the theme of violence against women. The artists have certainly used the soaring height of the building to great effect.

Oh, well done you for doing your homework, and well done them for such a powerful piece.

My favourite is the last. I have no idea what it means but it is evocative of waves and old-fashioned space travel!

Different styles – love the phoenix. I know what you mean about not catching the whole picture. I can never understand how they do these paintings in difficult positions and all. Skilled!

Skilled … and maybe just a little bit brave.
