A Sunset Walk

I didn’t take my camera. I’ve done that walk from home, along the river to West Tanfield dozens and dozens of times. Late the other afternoon, I was just scurrying along to collect our car, being serviced at the garage there.

Then on my left, I saw this:

And I knew that my walk would be a dramatic one. I stopped scurrying as I watched the sun falling gently behind the clouds, behind the trees, as I changed my vantage point with every step. It wasn’t a spectacular sunset, but it was special, as every sunset invariably is. Come with me.

The sheep appeared to have wandered away: the fields were empty.

To the right of me, the river was more delicately tinted:

At every step, a different view: sometimes the vivid fiery tones of the setting sun: at others, the gentler, prettier powdered pinks and blues of the more distant clouds.

My walk was almost over: I crossed the bridge and arriving in the village. The river continued its journey towards the Ouse, then the Humber, without me, and the sun finally disappeared behind the trees.

      1. Poor thing! Not Covid I hope? My third has now joined the Covid club, so they’ve all had it now. And solicitors … grrr. Hope it all comes out well.

      2. To be truthful he hasn’t tested for Covid, Margaret, but the issues don’t seem at all related. My daughter is just recovering from it too. Keep it in the family, but I’m not sure we want to!

  1. This is where mobile phones really come in to their own! In the ‘old days’ you’d have had nothing with you to capture these sights! The pink reflections in the river are beautiful as are the bare trees against that lovely sky – so worth lingering to see and share 😀

      1. It makes me want to throw myself into it. I wouldn’t but that is what the photo is telling me.
The stalls at one of our city’s concert halls are accessed by a very steep staircase. I get vertigo there and a strange urge to throw myself off the balcony. Again, I wouldn’t. It is such a weird feeling.

Thank you so much for sharing these amazing sky captures with my challenge, Margaret 🙂

  3. oh I know! I do take pics like these at every opportunity. Our little lake is a perfect back scenery in this respect. You have the firy red of the sundown, the long mirroring images of what is along the lake shore, you have the rippling waves and the dancing, rocking waterbirds, the trees seem to grow out of the water – but I must say, I DO miss the sheep in your takes. Sheep slowly grazing, hovering in or just out of the mist, the fog, uncaring about being in full sight or not. I mean, can this be beaten?
