Noticing the notices: a Saturday smile.

Trawling through my photos looking for something I couldn’t find, I came across these.

  1. What an interesting collection. It reminds me of when I was 17 and went to live in a girls hostel for my last year of school as the boarding part of the school closed down. From a very regulated environment we went into a very free one, run by a woman who detested signs and promoted communication. There were no rules but plenty of consequences of not following her one edict ‘consideration’ which she proved to us when she tore down a sign one of the created that read “Do not use the washing machine after 8pm’.
She said, if you are unable to resolve the problem through reasonable communication, then come and ask me help, but no imposing signage upon us all. She was the best, treated us like adults and taught us using a far better tool that authoritarianism.

  2. (Wish I had my camera)—Spotted one the other day: A parking lot; one side had a brick wall; no other signs on the wall, only this one: “Please Ignore This Sign”. Hmmm.

  3. Great collection Margaret. I never seem to have my camera handy when I see interesting signs. The other day a cap passed me with a sign in the rear window that said “no parking. I can’t think of a scenario in which that makes sense.

  4. What fun signs! Maybe the “wrong way” sign was put up to assist individuals who blindly follow directions and miss the obvious. I’ve read about people who ended up in ponds and other strange places when using using GPS – and I never can figure out why they didn’t just use a bit of common sense when the GPS voice told them to do something that was obviously incorrect

  5. Some of these had me laughing out loud. You reminded me of one of my few attempts to drive in America when I saw a sign saying ‘Do not pass’ and thought I wasn’t supposed to go past it. Fortunately, I could see everyone else was doing it.

  6. A most enjoyable collection of signs. Oddly though I find hairdressing places depressing and I had given up on hairdressers well before Covid, so lockdown didn’t perturb me on that score! Do remember the title song from that ancient musical ‘Hair!’ with the line ‘never have to cut it cos it stops by itself’? 🙂

      1. I used to have short hair until I liberated myself from the necessity 🙂
I have also been experimenting with what they call ‘no poo’ hair washing! Strange but true and having no connection whatsoever with real ales!

  7. These are hilarious. Sometimes these signs just make you burst out laughing when you come across them. I remember one in Japan kindly remind people to not stand on the toilets when using them, the illustration and red cross through it made it even funnier. I should have taken a photo.
