The Warm Light of Day

I’ve been thinking about the light as I’ve been on my walks this week.  The clear light of the early morning: the clear bright colours that the midday sun encourages, and the warm golden light of evening.  Sadly, the weather turned a bit cold and cantankerous as the week drew on, but I did my best to outwit it, or make use of it.  And I’ve included just one photo from the winter months, to remind us of the atmosphere of a misty cold day that began with a crusting of frost.

Without strong sun, there would be no dappled shade in the woods.
Rain’s on its way, making the shot almost monochrome.
The field of barley emphasises the mellow evening light.
The rain mutes and softens the colours of the trees.
A December day in Ripon. Only the street light gives away the fact that this shot isn’t in black and white.

  4. I’m shivering here; we certainly have a touch of winter in June. It will pass. And meanwhile I’ll bask in that field of poppies or maybe take a stroll along that woodland path …

  6. Thinking about the light made me view the photos in a different way. The dappled light in the woodland can be a real challenge for my camera. Your photo captures the woodland atmosphere well. A lovely and varied collection of photos.
    It is not often I hear you say the rain is much needed! I suppose the gusty wind is the price you pay to get the rain. I hope the weather mellows out again soon though.

    1. Not yet, but never mind. I thought we had a similar camera? Panasonic Lumix DMC – TZ80. Though you are cleverer than me at twiddling dials – most people are.

      3. Thanks Margaret. I did not know about the model you have, so I just looked it up and I see that many of the specs are the same as for the camera I have. One of the differences though is the main thing I really like about the FZ200, which is its low-light capability.
        And don’t underrate your photos! Your photos of the countryside and of architecture are particularly good.

  7. Nice pictures. Uk isn’t raining a lot during this spring… In Spain very stormy spring, May warm, and now isn’t too warm, but summer always arrive in Spain…

  9. Ah light – it makes all the difference wherever we may be as your images clearly show Margaret. We’re already feeling the coming of summer here as the days get ever-more sweltering. I could use a bit of a chill now and then!

  10. I find light fascinating especially in the context of planting schemes. Some of my favourite plants here in Battle look dreadful in the light of the Ariège. Mind you they’re shivering at the moment and it got down to 6 degrees in the greenhouse on Friday night.

    1. It’s dire, isn’t it? 10 degrees here now, mid-afternoon. When WILL you get back to Aigues-Vives I wonder? The same time we get to visit Spain, I guess…

  11. Lovely set of photos. It has turned horrible hasn’t it and cold. Do you remember the snow in England in June 1975. We were staying on the Suffolk coast and I remember waking up and looking out and telling my mother who said it must be hail, but it really was a thin layer of snow.
