A Backlit Virtual Tour for a Snapshot or Two

Let’s have a day out.  Lockdown’s still somewhat in force, so let’s make it a Virtual Day Out.  We’ve got homework to do: it’s time for Jude’s assignment:

This week's assignment - Use strong backlighting (i.e. shooting towards the light source, but do not look directly at the sun) to create a contre-jour image where the subject becomes a silhouette, OR shoot the light through flowers or leaves creating a transparent effect.

We’ll stay nearby at first: go to the local woods, and quite simply glance upwards.

Then we’ll whip over to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.  There’s a group of hikers beginning their day out, but we haven’t got time to join them …

… because we’re off to London.  William and I enjoy visiting the Bishop’s Palace at Eltham.  Last time we went, the sky turned an extraordinary colour for a while, and I took this photo.

Back at his house in time for sunset, you can see his school from a bedroom window.

Off to Gateshead now.  We’ll join a crowd of sightseers at the Baltic, looking over at the Tyne Bridge.

And we’re back home just in time to see another sunset.

2020 Photo Challenge #21

Who knows when or if I’ll be posting again? WordPress seems intent on our using block editor to prepare our posts, and currently, I’m flummoxed, and cross.

  1. Darlin, I know just how you feel. The last thing I feel like is a head banging session any time I want to post. I’m trying not to be negative but it could be the end of the road for me too. I haven’t even tried it yet, but there are other ways to have fun! Meantime, you’ve aggravated my wanderlust with this 🙂 🙂 Hopefully see you this afternoon.

  2. Some great Contre-jour here, Margaret! I haven’t even looked at the new Editor yet, but like everyone else I would rather not have to change…

  3. I hear you! I have made an effort to switch over but I don’t like it and I was perfectly happy with things as they were. I think – maybe I’m wrong – that we can continue using the old editor for now at least. But it’s frustrating. Maybe if I could see what benefits the new editor brought I’d feel more inclined to persevere but for now I see no benefits at all on a personal level.

  4. I love the clear skies we’re all experiencing at the moment and I get real pleasure from seeing your leaves against it

    1. It was great, wasn’t it? A fun idea. And I’m going to try to get as far as CSE WP skills by next Saturday so that I can ask Intelligent Questions. Some hope.

      1. Every question is intelligent so ask anything . . . . for example the + thing is really obvious once you know but took me a few times before I figured it out!

  5. My favourites are the first and the last.

I’m still using the old wp-admin version. The way I see it is they had and have retained the old version, they tried adding a new version, which didn’t quite make it and now they are withdrawing that and trying a different new version. For now, I am not inclined to make the change. You know I am here if you need me – we’ll be able to figure it out.

  6. An enjoyable collection of photos! I think within the block editor one can choose to use the “classic” format, which is supposed to be very similar to what we are used to. I quite like the new block editor (have only used it once though!) – some aspects are much quicker. There are some useful posts out there providing tips on how to use it, so don’t give up!!

    1. Tomorrow is a rainy day, apparently, so that will provide an opportunity to get stuck in. I’m not wasting a sunny day on WP! Thanks for your encouragement

  7. Excellent choices for an inventive take on the challenge. The green of those leaves really lifted to almost fluorescent. Are we or are we not allowed to take an in-real-life tour from today?

  8. I completely agree with you about the new editor. Why change? When all we want to do is write a bit and add a photo why do we need to make things complicated?
However, as you already know we can continue with the old editor for a while longer which I am tempted to do. Also, I have discovered that Sue W at Weekly Prompts has written a three part guide to the new editor. All three parts are downloadable and printable so I am going to see if they make sense to me. Here is a link to her blog https://weeklyprompts.com/2020/05/31/part-three-a-guide-to-the-block-editor/

    1. That looks a really useful guide, Clare. Thank you. I’ll certainly study these, though I quite resent having to do so when the current system ain’t broke.
