Top Tributes to our Top Key Workers

Scarecrows are appearing all over our village.  Not to scare any crows, but to say ‘Thank you’.  Thank you to all NHS and care workers, to shopkeepers and assistants, to delivery drivers … to everyone in the front line, helping us, and helping patients.  Here’s one, chosen because it’s atop the fence, making sure that all of us who pass by take notice, and are grateful.

    1. I can’t understand it. The picture’s there in the draft, but I agree it doesn’t show in the published post. I’ve taken it out and re-inserted it. It’s showing on mine now. Sorry!

  6. oh I love this way of saying thank you . . . . I must admit I am struggling with the clapping at the moment as it seems to be letting the government off the hook and putting pressure on some to clap. This though is a fabulous way to acknowledge them

    1. We don’t clap either. It would be a waste of time. Only the owls would hear us. And I agree: at the moment, it’s all down to Captain Tom and his back garden marathon.

    2. I’m sure they’d appreciate a decent pay rise as well as an appreciative clap! If the government hadn’t run the health service and the care service to the ground then they would not have needed to keep us all ‘safe’ whilst they rushed resources to where they are needed. WE know how good the NHS is, we don’t need bloody Boris and Co telling us every other sentence. Protect our NHS. Question is why didn’t YOU!

  7. Are you sure that’s not a real person? We don’t clap either, not many care workers around us. I did sneak a look last night to see if any of our neighbours were. They weren’t.

  8. Scarecrows – excellent top response and a genuine rural version.
    I am very much in agreement with Heyjude’s comment about protecting the NHS. My neighbour opposite is a paramedic. In my street there has been plenty of clapping and tooting, I even found my daughter’s tambourine (bruised my hand clapping first week). I can see my neighbour definitely appreciates the noisy support, but I am sure a secure, safe working environment (PPE?) underpinned by a genuine commitment from the government towards the NHS would be even more appreciated.

  10. I like the clapping as a neighborhood thing, but am not sure I like it being broadcasted on the BBC for some reason. I’ll take any moments of solidarity and good wishes I can find at the moment. The first night it happened, it was moving and I was almost in tears when I went back in. I do understand it doesn’t make up for any of the things that the NHS and carers are missing, of course it can not, but it is something. I can see on the faces of my neighbours as they clap that they are uplifted or in some cases, simply relieved to see each other – and it seems there are some carers and their families on the street. I live in a northern terrace and am sure it works differently in different neighborhoods. Needless to say I would not stand clapping in a field with nobody else in earshot – or at least I imagine not. 🙂

    1. No, you can feel pretty silly talking to the Little Owls, I can tell you. The population is welcoming this level of social contact I guess. What we need now though is more protection for, and practical help for all those carers and NHS staff. Clapping can only take you so far.

  12. What a nice way to acknowledge the health workers. I think it is inspirational that ordinary people show thanks and solidarity with health care workers. It might be expected that such solidarity would spur the government and policy makers on to providing sufficient PPE, remuneration and funding for health care workers, but …
